About Lisa

I am an experienced educator for grades 6-12. I am certified in Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky. I currently teach English and Theatre in Kentucky. I have tutored since high school where I volunteered as an ESL tutor. Upon starting college, I specialized in tutoring foreign students in various academic areas. I have taught in public schools for almost six years.

I studied ballet at various schools from the age of four, but my training got serious when I began to dance with the Alabama Ballet at the age of 10. I continued to dance with them until they split from the Alabama School of Fine Arts, ASFA, when I was about 13. I then stayed on and took lessons with ASFA until the age of 15. I began to get involved in my high school's band, and continued being involved in colorguard as I entered college. I have taught various dance lines, colorguards, and dance teams since college.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ballet

I studied ballet at various schools from the age of four, but my training got serious when I began to dance with the Alabama Ballet at the age of 10. I continued to dance with them until they split from the Alabama School of Fine Arts, ASFA, when I was about 13. I then stayed on and took lessons with ASFA until the age of 15. I began to get involved in my high school's band, and continued being involved in colorguard as I entered college. I have taught various dancelines, colorguards, and dance teams since college.

ESL/ESOL

I have several years of experience working with ESL students in public schools, colleges, and the community.

Study Skills

As a tutor at Jacksonville State University, one of my roles was tutoring student athletes in study skills/habits. Often teachers concentrate on content with little direction for students in how to study the content. I give students various methods they can try to help improve concentration in class, organization of materials, and studying at home. These methods go beyond simple rote memorization in order to help the student retain needed information.

Theatre

I minored in theatre at Jacksonville State University. I then went on to be certified in Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky as a theatre teacher. Finally, I currently teach high school theatre. We put on two shows a year with the club, and the intro class has a revue production at the end of the year.
