About Denise

I am a special education teacher who has taught in the secondary setting for over 10 years. The majority of students with whom I work struggle with ADD/ADHD, a Specific Learning Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Hearing Loss, Vision Loss, Emotional Disabilities, and/or Intellectual Challenges. These students often need to be shown ideas in a variety ways, have concepts broken into smaller chunks, or have more repitition to master a concept. In the inclusion setting, I co-teach primarily in science and math classes. Since my undergraduate degree is Special Education with a focus on Deaf Education, I also have a strong background in English. Since becoming Department Head, I interact with my student less than I have before. Therefore, I am looking for opportunities to teach those who have difficulty learning for whatever reason. This is what I excel at and what I want to do.

I have an aptitude for math and went through Calculus 3 in my undergraduate courses. As a teacher, I have co-taught Algebra 1A, Algebra 1B, Geometry, and Algebra 2 courses.

I enjoy science as it helps us explain the world around us. During my undergraduate work, I earned enough credits for a minor in Geology prior to transferring to Montevallo. Through work, I have co-taught Chemistry, Biology, Applied Physical Science, and Environmental Science classes.

Helping students realize their potential and gain confidence in themselves and in their knowledge is incredibly rewarding. While I enjoy helping all students, I have a heart for those who learn in different ways or who are struggling to find themselves. If you are having difficulty with learning a subject or having a lesson "click," I would be happy to help.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

As an inclusion special education teacher, many of my students have ADD/ADHD (often combined with other learning challenges). Part of my job entails helping them learn better coping strategies with which they can learn more effectively/efficiently. This can be as simple as pacing while studying or as complex as finding ways to use all the senses while studying. These students also often need explicit instruction in concepts as they've been distracted by internal or external stimuli during the direct instruction received at school. I have a degree in Special Education with a focus in Deaf Education from the University of Montevallo and earned my Master's degree at the same university in Collaborative Secondary Education.

Algebra 1

I am a special education teacher responsible for helping all my students (grades 9-12) across the curriculum. I have co-taught primarily in math and science classes for the past 10 years. Currently, I am co-teaching in Physical Science and in Algebra 2.

Aspergers

Students on the Autism Spectrum are a joy to teach. Over the years, I have worked with many individuals on the higher end of the Autism Spectrum. They often have very unique points of view which can contribute greatly to class discussions. On the other hand, they can also be very literal and can demonstrate difficulty with task analyzing and with finding alternate ways to learn material. I enjoy working with students on the spectrum to help them find academic as well as social success. I have a degree in Special Education with a focus in Deaf Education from the University of Montevallo and earned my Master's degree at the same university in Collaborative Secondary Education. I have taught students with special needs in inclusive settings for over 10 years. I have previously been named Rotary Teacher of the Year and am currently serving as the Special Education Department Head at my school.

Hard Of Hearing

My undergraduate degree is in Special Education with a focus in Deaf Education from the University of Montevallo. Since earning my degree in 2005, I have taught multiple students with hearing loss in a secondary, inclusion setting. Additionally, I have worked with ADRS to help facilitate successful transitions to postsecondary settings for students with hearing loss. I earned my Master's degree at the same university in Collaborative Secondary Education. I have taught students with special needs in inclusive settings for over 10 years.

Prealgebra

As a special education teacher, one of my biggest responsibilities is to task analyze assignments, find the holes in the students' background knowledge, and remediate those holes. In math, many of these holes require reteaching of pre algebra skills. Additionally, I primarily co-teach in math and science classes.

Special Needs

After earning a degree in Special Education with a focus in Deaf Education from the University of Montevallo, I began teaching in an inclusive, high school setting. Shortly after beginning my teaching career, I went to UAB and earned my Master's degree in Collaborative Secondary Education. I have taught students with special needs in inclusive settings for over 10 years. I have previously been named Rotary Teacher of the Year and am currently serving as the Special Education Department Head at my school. Through my co-taught classes, I have learned many subjects in depth. Although my focus subjects typically are in science and math, I help students with a variety of learning challenges master concepts across the curriculum.
