Hello! My name is Mimi and I retired from teaching in May of 2014. During my 30 years as a certified teacher in Georgia I taught first and third graders in all subject areas. I have tutored small groups in reading in grades 3-5 as well as Kindergarten students. I truly enjoy tutoring students in small groups since this allows us to communicate on a personal level.
My husband and I have recently moved to the Orange Beach area from North Georgia and I am interested in returning to my love of teaching. By tutoring students I will work to help them succeed in school! Throughout my teaching career I have taught many types of programs for reading, language, and writing, and I know how to customize a program to meet a student's individual needs.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
During my 30 years of teaching I taught third grade for 10 years. I taught these students to write in cursive. We began with tracing single letters and progressed to connecting letters and words and finally sentences. The type of cursive used was Modern Style.
I taught phonics in the teaching of reading for 30 years in a Georgia Public School System. I received training in college and many teacher training meetings as a teacher. Some students have difficulty with phonics reading and need other forms of teaching such as sight word recognition. However, sounding out words with phonics is a successful way for most students to learn. A phonemic awareness test would be a good starting point when teaching young students.
