I have been teaching for 22 years. My certification is in Special Education, but I work with all students at the elementary level. I have a love for helping young children achieve their highest level of potential. My belief is that all students can learn when provided with the best instruction that meets his or her individual needs and learning styles. I take the time to get to know my students and develop a plan that will be fun, but still provides the content that is needed. No two students learn exactly the same and instruction needs to be individualized.
It is very important to me to see all of my students succeed. It is my belief that even small successes be celebrated. Taking things one step at a time will lead to great success in the end. Even when things seem impossible, I encourage a no giving up thought process. There is nothing that can't be accomplished when effort is applied.
I have attained Highly Qualified Status in Reading. I attended Reading Initiative Training and use the skills in both my classroom and with students that I tutor. I work with my Instructional Coach to keep my knowledge and skills up to date.
I utilize the Common Core in planning my lessons and in my daily instruction.
I have received TEAM Math and AMSTI training. I also participate in training workshops and Summer Academy to refresh my skills and learn new ideas for instruction.
My training with ARI Strategies, Reading Horizons and S.P.I.R.E, enable me to provide a variety of instructional methods to enhance student learning.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a Special Education teacher for 20 years, I have had to work with many students with varying levels of ADD/ADHD. I have the patience to work with students in spite of their inability to focus. I find ways to keep them on task and to overcome their weaknesses.
I have received training in Autism through my M.Ed. and Ed. Specialist programs. I also have attended numerous workshops and week long trainings that are geared to teaching students with all levels of Autism. Additionally, in my 20 years of teaching in the public school system, I have had the pleasure of teaching many students with all levels of Autism.

As a Special Education teacher I have training in teaching reading to students with many different disabilities. I have been trained in using Reading Horizons, Riggs Method of Reading and Spalding. Additionally, I participated in the Alabama Reading Initiative training.
I have been through TEAM Math and AMSTI training through Auburn University. I have taught math using a variety of math programs at all elementary grade levels. In my classroom as well as tutoring sessions, I have found that a frequent review of previously taught skills is important to grasp a new concept. I also believe that there is no set way to arrive at an answer to a math problem. As long as a student is able to understand how they got an answer, and the answer is correct, the method of reaching that solution is fine.

I am Highly qualified as a reading teacher by the State of Alabama. I have been trained in the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) and have employed the techniques learned in my reading instruction. I utilize many techniques and methods in reading instruction to help students to become successful readers.
I have worked with individuals with Special Needs for my entire adult life (30+ years). I hold a AA teaching certificate in Collaborative Education. I have been working as a Special Education Teacher for the last 20 years.
