Auburn University (Master's)
I worked in the Public Relations/Marketing field for 20+ years. In 2009 I left the field to finish my Master's degree and began teaching at the college level. I have taught Public Speaking and Oral Communication classes during my tenure as a college instructor. While I enjoyed my time in the PR industry, it has always been my desire to teach at the college level as I feel I truly thrive in the classroom. It is my goal to offer a unique perspective to my students by by combining what I learned in the professional field with scholastic teachings. Many students that take Public Speaking classes come to the classroom terrified the first day. I try to put them at ease through many different in class exercise to make them more comfortable with speaking in public. It has been said that the fear of public speaking is one of the top fears of many, ranking second only to the fear of death. A lot of students are turning to online public speaking classes to avoid having to speak in the classroom, however, they often find themselves unsure of what they need to do to make their speeches memorable. I would love to work with those type of students or students that are in the classroom but struggling in that environment.
Additionally, because of the numerous projects that I have tackled while in the Public Relations field combined with the writing and thesis work that I had to do while getting my Master's I have honed my reading and language/writing skills and can assist students that are struggling in those areas as well. Students new to college often try to write like they speak. However, there is a much different approach to the written word than the spoken word as it requires a much more detailed process to make sure the meaning is understood. This is true in high school language/literature classes as well as in college-level courses.
I currently serve as Youth Parent Team Leader in the Youth ministry program at our church and have taught the College Sunday School class as well. I look forward to having the opportunity of assisting you or your student with any of the subjects I mentioned. I worked in the Public Relations/Marketing field for 20+ years. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
