About Amanda

I earned a BA in Literary and Art Criticism with Minors in Math and Women's Studies in 2010. While an undergraduate, I tutored several advanced undergraduates and Master's level students for success on the Math portion of the GRE. I am proficient in teaching Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. I also proofread papers for many graduate students at the Master's and Doctoral levels. Though my degrees give me experience in writing, I enjoy teaching math! I think many people are intimidated by math, but I try to take a fun approach to figuring out complex problems.

I'd love to help you meet your educational goals! My teaching pedagogy is very student centered, so I take an approach that is individually tailored to each student. More often than not, however, I find that students benefit from seeing problems worked out for them step-by-step. Many math instructors, especially at the college level, do not have time to work though many examples in class before moving on to the next topic, and, increasingly, colleges are moving toward web-based instruction for basic and remedial math courses. I think students' performance suffers as a result of these practices, and I strive to take as much time as I can to thoroughly explain and demonstrate each topic. Nothing makes me happier than seeing students succeed!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I received top marks in high school mathematics courses and was a prominent member of my school's math team. I earned a minor in Mathematics at the University of Alabama and was only two courses away from taking it as a second major. I like to work through problems with students and explain every step along the way.
