Public speaking didn't always run in my blood though. The thought of public speaking used to drive a knife of fear down my stomach. I still remember days of sweat palms, a queasy stomach & a shaky voice. But with perseverance, practice, and patience from my amazing speech coach I succeeded in speech beyond anything I could have imagined! The practical life skills I learned during my four years of speech will stay with my entire life. Those who communicate well succeed in life.
I competed in a competitive high school speech for 4 years. My senior year I was invited to attend the National Championship (top 10% of the nation) in 4 speech events: Illustrated Oratory (6th place), Apologetics (12th place), Persuasive Speaking (quarter-finals), & Thematic Interpretation. I was the 33rd ranked speaker in the Nation.
Outside of NCFCA I competed in a competitive leadership speech where I received 1st & 2nd ranked titles on two separate occasion. Additionally I took part in Toastmaster for a short time where I won 1st place in a divisional Tall Tails contest before a personal conflict prevented me from continuing to partake in the club.
In my four years of competing I have given hundreds of speeches & have served as a speech judge on multiple occasions. I have personally competed in final rounds of limited-prep events, creative & illustrated speeches, persuasive speeches, & interpretive speeches. I have dedicated thousands of hours to studying public speaking & pride myself in being well versed in the keys to being a great speaker!
