My name is Jamie. I am a retired teacher and administrator with 36 years of experience with Mobile County Public School System. My undergraduate degree is in Special Education.
I taught all disabilities and enjoyed watching them exceed beyond their limitations physically and mentally! My Master's degree is in Elementary Education. I have taught 1-6 grades. My favorite was my first graders. It was so rewarding watching them learn to read and soar!
I was also a Reading Coach which allowed me the opportunity to work with small groups of students in focusing on improving their Reading skills. My administrative certification allowed me the opportunity to work as an assistant principal. This experience exceeded all! I not only worked with faculty members but specific students and their families. I was able to see transformation through guidance, counseling, in-house as well as outside resources and positive attitude changes.
I have experience in tutoring which is also awesome. Tutoring one-on-one is like no other. I have the opportunity to meet the student where they are academically and build from there. The student is freer to learn and focus without distraction, competition or scrutiny from their peers. It allows me the opportunity to utilize material on their level which ultimately affords the student success. When a student feels success and accomplishment an inner desire to learn more formulates and learning for them becomes inviting. As a tutor that's what you want to accomplishment! Empowerment of "I CAN!"
My Professional Development in Math proficiency provided me different strategies and techniques to utilize with my students. These different strategies afforded my students the keys to making connections in math. All students learn differently! Some are auditory, some are visual some are textual but all students can learn! This knowledge allows me to confidently explain concepts and processes to my students. I understand that there may be multiple ways to solve problems but using alternate strategies help my struggling students grasp difficult concepts. I provide lessons that will engage students and help them feel confident in their mathematical abilities. I am a facilitator of learning, providing students with the knowledge and tools to solve problems and then encouraging them to solve them on their own.
I am ranked as a highly qualified teacher in reading. I know that reading development begins well before children enter school and continues throughout a child's school experience. Every child deserves excellent reading teachers because they make a profound difference in children's reading achievement and motivation to read . I am an excellent reading teacher! I offer a variety of ways to teach reading, when to use each method, and how to combine the methods into an effective instructional program. I also offer a variety of materials and texts for children to read. In order to provide these materials, I continually assess a child's individual progress and relate my reading instruction to a child's previous experiences. I actively engage students in learning from the materials at hand. Reading is an interactive process but without the ability to read and write, children are placed at a disadvantage in almost every educational setting. I provide teacher-student interaction. I provide guidance to a student in learning a particular skill and explicitly teaching them what they need to know. I want my students to embrace a Love For Reading!
As a tutor, I want my students to develop self- confidence and improve study skills. I want to provide them with an opportunity to speak up and ask questions . I want to provide the practice and drill in specific course material needed for them to be successful. I have the subject knowledge but also the ability to show empathy to the student and their struggles. I am attentive to the needs of my students and their level of frustration. I will provide students with strategies that will help them be successful. My name is Jamie. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
