I have been a teacher for the past forty-four years, teaching at all levels from elementary to high school. I taught for thirty-two years in Barbados at the secondary school level, one year at the middle school level and eleven years at the elementary school level. The latter two were in the Bronx, New York. Although I have taught many subject areas, Mathematics has been my primary focus.
My education consists of a teaching certificate in Secondary Education for Erdiston teachers' College Barbados with the emphasis in Math and Science; a bachelor of Science in Psychology from Howard University, Washington, D.C and a masters Degree with emphasis in Education and Developmental Psychology from Andrews University Michigan. I am New York State certified in childhood education (K-6) and recently completed a certificate in the teaching of Middle School Math from City College, New York,in addition to a few other teaching qualifications.
I have also taught Mathematics at an adult level institute in Barbados and tutored Math at the Bronx Seventh Day Adventist Church for at least five years.
I have a keen interest in students and their success and believe that given the correct environment and stimulation all students can succeed and reach their fullest potential. I see tutoring and teaching as a means of equipping students with the techniques, skills, attitudes and behavior necessary to achieve their goals. That is why as far as possible, I use real life situations and experiences to teach the subject area. Depending on the nature of the material to be learned role play, drama, research, and discussion play a major role in my teaching. I am confident that, once the student is disciplined and willing to work hard and persevere and as long as parents are willing to cooperate with me, then the student can have abundant success. I am only the facilitator of that success.
I anxiously await the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of more students. My motto is: "If I can help somebody as I pass life's road then my living will not be in vain." In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I completed a course of study offered by the College of Preceptors, Essex in which I majored in Biblical Studies. The diploma received was called the Licentiate of the College of Preceptors (LCP) which is equivalent to a Bachelors degree. In addition, I have taught that subject for a number of years at the secondary school level.
Apart from being certified in childhood education (K-6) I have taught for twelve years in an elementary school in the Bronx, New York. In addition, I have completed a program at City College, New York in the teaching of Mathematics to middle school students. Overall, I have been a teacher for approximately forty-four years and have taught most of the subjects on the elementary curriculum.
While studying at teacher college in Barbados, I was enrolled in an Art course which included calligraphy. I have also taught handwriting at the Wilton School to a class of second graders. The emphasis was on script and cursive writing. The second grader program involved students tracing the letters and numbers and then writing relevant sentences own their own.
As part of my course of study at Andrews University I did some counseling courses. These included vocational and academic guidance of which study skills was a part. I have also assisted students in making a relevant study plans to improve their study habits.
