About Shari

As an educator, I strive to customize my sessions to each person's needs, making sure that special arrangements are made to help students with their unique challenges, allowing them to excel in the subjects they find difficult. By helping my students to find their own approaches to the subjects, the students not only learn more quickly, but they begin to feel more confident as they achieve their personal goals.

Before we begin our sessions together, I would like my students to know something about me. I have tutored at several locations, including the University of South Alabama and St. Mary's Home. I am currently the director and owner of Commedia del Arte Traveling Players. I have written four books on the subject of King Arthur, and I am currently seeking publication for these as well as a new book written for young adult readers. I have also studied four different styles of martial arts, including Kung Fu, Shodokan Karate, and Tai Chi, both 72 and 24 styles. I have performed and taught ballet, jazz, and lyrical and medieval dance for many years.

I have always loved learning and helping others to love learning as much as I do. Some of the tools that enable me as a teacher include four degrees from the University of South Alabama in Drama and Music, History, Spanish, and English/Literature. I also love the arts in any form, and as a result of my theatre training, I have also learned to sew and embroider, allowing me to produce professional quality costumes and accessories.

I look forward to meeting my students and to helping them to reach any goal they may have set for themselves. More than anything, I believe it is not impossible to succeed as long as you remain curious and seek out fresh perspectives.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

All aspects of the filming process from central casting to directing, using lighting techniques and camera angles will be covered under each session.

I have studied martial arts for at least ten years. In those years I have spent three years training in Kung Fu, three yeas in Tai Chi, and five years in Shodokan Karate, achieving the purple belt rank. I have taught embroidery for several years at various community activity programs and have won several awards in craft shows for my work.

Public Speaking

I have taught public speaking at many levels from one on one to large class seminars. By training the natural voice to project the student is able reach greater distance without the use of microphones. The first lesson is how to overcome stage fright and the importance of enunciation and the proper use of pauses.

I have also delivered many public speeches and have taught a professional story tellers class. In so doing I am able to demonstrate to the student how inflections, tone and cadence help draw the audience in the emotional direction that the speaker chooses.

Reading

To achieve total comprehension of what is read I begin with the following steps: with young children I use verbalization, followed by explanation of the words and ending with a review of what each sentence means. Then I suggest re-reading aloud to help the child process the information on more than one level. At any point the student is encouraged to ask questions if they do not understand.

Sewing

I have sewn using a machine and by hand for over twenty years. I am able to demonstrate to the student how to make their own patterns and how to make the most of yardage and work around difficulties such as insufficient yardage, putting in a zipper, button holes and difficult patterns.

I have sewn professionally for over ten years incorporating my skills into my theatre troupe and for the general public when specialty needs arise.

Spanish

I have a degree from the University of South Alabama. I have taught accelerated Spanish to nine year old students in the gifted program at St. Luke's Episcopal School and have taught adults for Mobile Community Activities program for several years. I use games and immersion techniques to give the student confidence and true spanish speaking ability.
