About Jonathan

Hi,

My name is Mr. F. I teach 10th grade at a high school in Madison. To say teaching is my favorite job would be an understatement. I love teaching because I enjoy a challenge. I also enjoy challenging my students. I tell my students that they only way through progress is through the threshold of frustration. My class will frustrate you, and you will emerge a better student and a deeper thinker.

My teaching style is very hands on. I only give critical thinking assignments, so it is important that I guide my students down the right path. I can be quite critical at times, especially when analyzing a text, because I believe good writing means rewriting, and rewriting, and rewriting. If a student does not wish to become a better writer, then the student or parent should look elsewhere for a tutor. I am passionate about my work; I sincerely wouldn't be doing anything else.

I love English because it opens up the mind by encouraging critical thinking. I want to instill this philosophy in every student I meet.

If you like a challenge, contact me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I currently teach high school English, and enjoy it. I also majored in English Language Arts Education. I tutor English in my spare time, and I enjoy challenging students in the subject.

Grammar

Grammar is an important tool in my teaching because of my emphasis on structure. With writing comes rewriting, and rewriting always involves a discussion on grammar. Structure is the backbone of good writing, so I emphasize the grammar rules to my students.

Literature

One of the reasons I am passionate about English is because I am passionate about reading. Reading literature voraciously is a hobby of mine, and is why I feel qualified to teach literature. The conversations that revolve around books are my favorites, and I look forward to the ones I can have with my students.

Proofreading

I can be quite critical of writing, which is perhaps why I enjoy proofreading. In my spare time, I proofread articles, essays, and books in order to hone my proofreader's eye. I believe the proofreader's marks are important, although a bit obsolete in today's cut and paste society. Regardless, I enjoy looking over a text and finding little ways to make the words flow better and have a bigger impact.

Vocabulary

Being a voracious reader gives me a higher than average vocabulary. This is not to boast, but to highlight my genuine love for long words, strange words, words with double meanings, and so on. Teaching vocabulary is always fun for me, because through teaching vocabulary, I get to learn new words as well and encourage my students to use them in everyday life.

Writing

The ability to write is the most important skill an adult must have. Writing, unlike some subjects, will never escape a person's life, whether it be an email or a business proposal. It is my job to instill the importance of writing in a student, so when they are in their business they can convey their ideas properly to someone who might not be in the room with them.
