About BETH A.

I am currently and have been a certified educator in music K-12 and reading in Florida. I have taught elementary school music in public schools and for non-profits, and teach privately in my home piano, voice, and instrumental music. I have previously taught the Kodaly method, which relies on the "Do Re Mi" concept, and musical games to reinforce sound and placement of notes and engaging children in fun activities to learn and appreciate music. Music helps to reinforce reading, math and social skills in students, especially young children which help in those respective school subjects. It also helps with concentration. It is also a universal language that people all over the world can listen to and appreciate.

I have previously substituted in all subject-levels K-6, and have worked with adults in church choirs and in other educational environments. From a safety standpoint, I have been successfully fingerprinted by the Alabama State Department of Education, and the US military, and have attended and successfully completely Youth Prevention Training with the Diocese of Birmingham. I would be interested in tutoring your child in elementary school subjects such as reading, phonics, vocabulary, music history, or vocal music . I use a very fun pictorial music book, and supplement the lesson with hands on rhythm activities with hands, our feet, or other percussion instruments to enhance our learning experience.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have assisted in the preparation of individualized learning plans with lead teachers and parents for children with ADHD, and other related learning exceptionalities. I have taught those children in a large-group (classroom) and in a one-to-one (tutor) setting using Music. reading, phonics, comprehension, singing, listening, playing of instruments, performance, and faith-based curriculums, for the past 7 years. I have completed coursework at the undergraduate level in Exceptional Student Education, and 18 hours of in-service training as a certified teacher, also in Exceptional Student Education specific to dealing with ADHD, and other learning exceptionalities.

Autism

I have taught high-functioning children with Autism, in the classroom, and on a one-to-one level, when there was off-task behavior in the classroom. I have used Music principles of reading, math (rhythm), listening, hands-on instrument play, all help to promote concentration, for the past 7 years. I have completed coursework at the undergraduate level in Exceptional Student Education, and 18 hours of in-service training as a certified teacher, also in Exceptional Student Education, specific to Autism.

Ear Training

Having a Bachelor's of Music, and teaching music, to successfully get students to learn about pitches, what notes sound like, I use the piano, and recorder and play higher and lower notes to test their ability of matching pitches by sound. To teach successful placement of pitches, I use the Kodaly hand placement technique which uses the Do Re Mi...or C D E sound to hand placement gestures. This is also done with sight singing. Musical recordings can also be used to duplicate what is played to match what the student has heard.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have substituted for all subjects in Grades K-6, full-time for several years. As a certified educator in Music and Reading, many of the learning skills used in the regular subjects, such as reading, math, and of course through practice and memorization, are enhanced through music. This is research based.

General Music

I am a certified educator in Music K-12 and have been since 1980 from the State of Florida, with a certified Reading Endorsement for grades K-12. I have a Bachelor's of Music from Berry College. I have taught Music and substituted in elementary education with Leon County Schools in Tallahasse, Florida from 2003-2007. I have taught with the Boy's & Girls clubs in Tallahassee, and currently teach music in my home. Copies of my teaching certificate and degree diploma can be furnished upon request.

Music History

Having a Bachelor's of Music, and teaching in the public schools and privately, it is essential to know your curriculum and historical background of your subject to be able to talk about it, especially as a lead in with students to engage them in learning. For example, the piano is an Instrument invented by the Italian Cristofori, known as a Pianoforte in the early 1700's, which means soft and loud, and are terms in music known as dynamics. The piano belongs to the Keyboard family.

Phonics

I have a Reading Endorsement attached to my teaching certificate, in Music from an accredited state agency which is current. It was a 35 hour course, equivalent to a master's degree.

Piano

I have a Bachelor's of Music, (Piano was the major instrument, and voice was the minor) and currently I teach piano, voice and instrumental music in the home, which involves, piano, voice, sight-singing and music history.

Reading

I am a certified educator in music and reading in Florida, have taught in the public schools and privately. I currently teach music at home.

Voice (Music)

Having a Bachelor's of Music, (Piano was the major instrument, and voice was the minor) teaching vocal music is about taking the voice and learning that is an instrument and how to get it sound right, the mechanics, proper technique, breath support and control, what vocalizing is, interpretation, etc. We use the piano, recordings to model from and instructor led modeling as well.
