About Richard

I am a retired federal employee of Redstone Arsenal. For the past 10+ years I have worked as a substitute teacher in Madison City, Madison County and Huntsville City Schools. I primarily worked in grades K-6 but have done middle and high school. I have to say my favorite grades have been 2nd, 3rd and 4th although I have done all the others. I have a background in math and science from my college days and working for Uncle Sam for 30 years. I have found that working with children has given me a real opportunity to provide them with the tools they need to succeed. I have often conveyed my own personal experiences in school to help them better understand some unfamiliar concept. My motto as a substitute teacher has always been "If the children learned something and I learned something then we all had a good day!" I am a retired federal employee of Redstone Arsenal. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

I have worked with autistic children through inclusion in a classroom setting as well as in on-on-one situations as a substitute teacher. I have learned to recognize certain behaviors that may be unique to each student and to hopefully be able to adjust my teaching techniques to meet their specific needs. My wife has a masters in special education and has provided invaluable advice to help me work with these children.
