About Dawn

I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in English, Geography minor, and a post graduate degree in English Literature Education. I also hold a Master of Arts in Teaching, with English as a Second Language K-12 as an added endorsement.

I have taught English to students of all ages. From elementary and middle school to high school and college level, my students have been natives of the USA, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean Region, Europe and Latin America.

In 18 years of college level instruction I have taught Basic Writing and Reading skills as well as Elements of Writing to students who are native speakers of English. Helping students chart a path to success through College 101 or "How to be a Successful Student" is another of my favorite areas of instruction.

I have also provided one-on-one tutoring for students who are speakers of other languages in all areas of English Language Acquisition, including

* Speaking: Conversation, Pronunciation, Public Speaking
* Reading: Skimming, Scanning, Intensive & Extensive reading
* Writing: Academic, Business and Creative

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I focus on the learning styles and needs of students who are preparing for the ACT. In order to tailor the instruction, I start with the assessment of the individual student's level of achievement and abilities. The goal is to successfully incorporate the curriculum which will prepare students to do well on the test. But helping students to cover the required material the material is only a part of the tutor’s job. The most important piece is in preparing the student to maximize his or her talents and to bolster the weak areas. Then it will be clear what new skills should be introduced to accommodate their academic challenges. I have found his individualized approach to be very effective in increasing my students' test taking abilities.

English

When we think about Grammar we often focus on errors and rules and it can be an uninspiring aspect of language use. But there is a positive side we don’t often see. Having a good grasp of grammar improves comprehension, and makes it easier to produce writing that is engaging and precise. For over 20 years I have helped students from elementary to college level to work through difficulties with grammar. Some students struggle with basic usage including parts of speech, verb tenses and punctuation. Other writers need to focus on thesis or focus, audience and purpose, organization, and development. More often it is a combination of these lower or higher order concerns. I help my students to address those issues and improve their ability to communicate easily, effectively and creatively.

ESL/ESOL

For years my great pleasure has been sharing my passion for the English language with English language learners. I have taught students from elementary to college level overseas as well as in the US. My qualifications include K-12 ESL endorsement and over 18 years experience in intensive ESL, preparing students for the academic demands of the American college system. I tailor my techniques and teaching strategies to individual students based on assessments of levels of accomplishment, goals and learning styles.
Subject areas include:
* Speaking: Conversation, Pronunciation, Public Speaking
* Reading: Skimming, Scanning, Intensive & Extensive reading
* Writing: Academic, Business and Creative
* Grammar: Spoken and Written
* Culture: Understanding and functioning in a new culture without losing your identity.

Grammar

Do you feel baffled by grammar rules? Are you overwhelmed by the struggle with parts of speech, verb tenses and punctuation? Learning rules and exceptions to rules can be uninspiring and dull. But if your grammar is good, your audience will focus on the ideas you present rather than any imperfect grammar usage. This makes a big difference in the reception you get as a speaker and as a writer. With polished grammar you come across as being intelligent, confident and professional. Let me help you find the right approach to burnish your skills. It might even be fun!

Proofreading

I offer several levels of proofreading and editing services. For basic proofreading I check for obvious typographical, punctuation and spelling errors. I also offer light or medium editing for mechanics. This includes parts of speech, subject-verb agreement, capitalization, homophones, homonyms and homographs. I can also identify and modify poor sentence structure and word placement. I will make suggestions for alternative vocabulary choices to promote clarity. All revisions are made within the manuscript using Microsoft Word so you can view tracked changes and comments, and accept or reject the recommended changes.

Reading

I initially studied to be a teacher of English Literature because I absolutely LOVE to read. Reading was my favorite pastime as a child and I'm still a fan of a good book. I thought it would be a great idea to spend my life reading, talking and writing about books. As I entered the classroom I found that all aspects of teaching English were fun for me and my students flourished in shared joy of reading and expressing their own thoughts. Reading skills are the key to the world of learning. Without these essential skills students falter in comprehension and have difficulty in producing correct responses in all subjects. I encourage my students to access reading through their own particular area of interest. Once we have interest then we can focus on achieving the learning target.

Study Skills

As a College 101 instructor I have guided students in developing a personalized approach to student success since 2009. A large part of this process is learning how to manage your time, take better notes and process them in a timely fashion. Utilizing an understanding of your personality and learning styles you can study more effectively to improve recall and improve performance in written assignments and test taking. To help you become successful, I will help you identify concrete goals that excite and inspire you and implement a series of manageable steps to achieve them.

Vocabulary

Is it principle or principal? Is it peddle or pedal? Sounds like a spelling problem, doesn't it?
"Does it matter if I use the wrong word? Why should I expand my vocabulary anyway? Most people don't know a lot of words and I don't want to sound like a geek!"
These are some of the questions I've discussed with students who are not in love with words as I am. Not everyone gets a kick from figuring out the meaning of a word from identifying the root. But even if you don't love words, you need a good vocabulary, if only for basic comprehension. If a man is pedaling his bicycle he is riding it. If he is peddling his bike then it is for sale. If you have good vocabulary others will you regard you as intelligent, competent and well educated. Improving your vocabulary will enable you to catch meanings that elude others and to present yourself articulately and confidently in writing and in speech. But if you ask me why you should improve your vocabulary I will always assure you that learning new words and using them precisely is fun!

Writing

Many students dread writing and have to be dragged kicking and screaming to writing assignments. There are many ways to approach writing but the most important in my estimation is the revelation of the writer's voice. We all have something to say. We might not know how to say it in a format that is expected or accepted in school, college or work, but if you can text you can write. I tap into the creativity that abounds in my students and and encourage them find their voices. Then I help them to learn the conventions required for different types of writing. I help them to think critically about topics and practice the structures that make each form recognizable in an academic, business or social setting. Certainly, grammar and spelling matter. Punctuation and sentence structure are indispensable in a good piece of writing. But at the base of it all is the voice. Your audience wants to hear what you think. All you have to learn is how best to share your thoughts.

Excellent! Teaches well and puts the student at ease.

Nothing but good things to say! My daughter was struggling with an essay required for English 102. Dawn met us on short notice, read what she had so far, read the assignment, and immediately went to work helping my daughter understand what steps she should take to give the teacher what she is most likely looking for in the essay. My daughter gets overwhelmed easily, and Dawn was very good about
