About Rita

My teaching career has been full of variety. I taught Preschool - Kindergarten for 8 years, including a year of Montessori. I have also taught 3rd and 5th grades, and most recently, worked with at-risk students in all grade levels. I have worked with children of affluence to those in great physical need. I strive to help every child view him or herself as a valued individual, with talents, abilities, gifts, and strengths to be used to make a difference in this world.

I work well with younger children in all subject areas and have been successful in teaching children how to read and write, as well as assisting struggling readers and writers as they begin applying those skills to content areas. I assist students (and parents/caregivers) in evaluating "how" they do this thing we call "school" in order to pinpoint areas where disorganization of materials and time may be hindering academic success. I believe the adults in the home are students' first real teachers, and am honored to work along side them, so that, together, we can help students work closer to their potential.

Because the home is the primary environment in which students work, I would prefer to tutor there; however, I am open to another arrangement. If you are interested in my services, I would like to begin with a telephone interview. If we feel that we may have a good fit, we can discuss further details.

I look forward to conversing with you, and meeting the needs of your students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a BS in Elementary Education from Eastern Kentucky University (Richmond, KY,) with additional specialized Kindergarten Certification. I hold a MAT in Early Childhood Education from Saginaw Valley State University (Saginaw, MI). My experience over 13 years includes Pre-K through 6th grade classrooms. Over an additional 13 year period, through a Rural Health Clinic acting as a fiduciary (Sterling, MI), I provided (to multiple grade levels), Sexual Abstinence Education, tutoring for at-risk students, and a School Success Program, in which I initiated and implemented the use of the SOAR Study Skills System.

Grammar

Throughout my career, when in a team teaching situation, I am the one who would volunteer to teach Grammar. The challenge is to make what most deem boring into a purposeful, can-do experience! Students who are taught grammar and who apply it to their writing and speaking, will be far ahead of other students as they advance in their academic career and into the world of work. As I assist college students in their writing assignments, I often reteach grammar concepts which, once mastered, always raise their grade!

Handwriting

As an Early Childhood Educator, I have guided young children through their first attempts in holding pencils, crayons, etc. I have assisted and modeled easier, less “uncomfortable” physical methods as children progress in marking, drawing, and finally making letters. I have used a variety of handwriting programs (through grade 4), including Zaner-Bloser, Handwriting Without Tears, D’Nealian, and Benson. I have concluded that, in the end, it is unnecessary to put children under relentless pressure to adhere to a certain model. If clear, readable handwriting is exhibited, modeled, and patiently illustrated in a relaxed setting, most children eventually master handwriting. (With computer usage, there is an ongoing debate regarding the necessity of handwriting. Most educators are still teaching the process.)

Proofreading

Because I understand Grammar, and the mechanics and organization of what makes for good writing, proofreading naturally follows. Spell Check does not, of course, catch all spelling errors, thus I note the misuse of homophones, word repetition or deletion, etc. If I am available, I will proofread an assignment at the last minute (1-5 pages). At that point, I cannot help you rewrite/reorganize your paper, beyond some simple suggestions.

Reading

On a side note, I use a number of techniques & resources which I tailor to a student's individual needs. Boys particularly need hands on, logical strategies, which make sense to them. As I would get to know your son and how he thinks, AND if we would be a good match, I am sure we would see progress.

Study Skills

I have used the S.O.A.R. Study Skill System with good results when students consistently apply what is shown and taught. The system is hands on, and includes on-line support. I also utilize resources from colleges offering study skill and time management assistance to struggling students. Solutions can be quite unique, as individual learning style, abilities, and preferences must be taken into account. This is an area in which the student has total control.

Writing

I have taught writing from the most basic scribbles of the preschooler, to a few sentences of a second grader. I have then taught students how to write a cohesive paragraph and how to put those paragraphs together to flow properly and logically, making sense to the reader. Guiding students to create some type of visual organizer keeps the process focused and provides a way to see what has been accomplished and what is still to be done. Students usually need guidance in how to approach different genres--short response, essay, story, research, etc. so they actually meet the criteria. The process of writing--producing words on paper which accurately express what is in the mind--requires one to actually "think through" something abstract and make it concrete, requiring a higher-level of thinking,
This is not always an easy task, but taken in small steps, a student can achieve success.

Great Teacher

Rita helped my son with comprehending questions and focused reading. She did an excellent job identifying his problem with the subject matter and worked with him to correct it. Thank you.
