I’m Kayla! I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Spelman College. I am currently pursuing a M.Ed. in Secondary Mathematics at the University of West Alabama. For me, the beauty of mathematics is the logical though processes that can be transferred to every area of life. While the numbers and theories are important, I chose to learn and teach mathematics because, when properly taught, students gain decision making skills, confidence, and the ability to think through problems they may have never seen before. As a teacher, I encourage my students to ask how and why instead of devoting all of their focus on the getting the correct answer. This way they build a conceptual understanding on which they can build their mathematical foundation.
I have 5+ years of experience in mathematics instruction/tutoring. I was a tutor at the Spelman College Math Lab for three years. There I tutored pre-calculus, calculus 1-3, differential equations, and abstract and liner algebra on a walk in basis. Post-graduation, I worked as a high school mathematics teacher in the Louisiana public school system for two years. As a teacher, I provided instruction and tutoring in algebra 1, algebra 2, ACT prep, EOC geometry remediation. After moving to back to my home, Alabama, I worked as a mathematics tutor at Calhoun Community College and an instructor at Mathnasium of Madison for over a year. In these positions I taught/tutored everything from 2nd grade mathematics through differential equations. This included developmental math as well as trigonometry. I currently serve as a software instructor.
When I commit to working with a student, I am invested in their success. In order to provide maximum benefits to the student, I am open to all resources, suggestions, and feedback from students and parents. I do expect student to be willing to prepare and help me to build a plan that helps them excel in the course and in the future.
