About Jennifer

I have been a teacher for ten years. I find great satisfaction in seeing students' make progress and master skills that they may have previously struggled with. Coming from a family of teachers and administrators, I grew up around a passion of teaching all ages. I inherited that passion and pursued an education degree at the University of North Alabama, where my passion only deepened.

I have worked in three different states; Alabama, Florida and Mississippi. Each one of these states offered a different kind of student, parent, and curriculum. I worked with students from kindergarten through sixth grade, working with them in after school and summer programs and well as my time in the classroom. The variety of students and needs forced me to gain a broader knowledge of education techniques and also a broader knowledge of types of students. Ultimately, it made me a more well-rounded teacher. Likewise, I have worked with many special education students: autistic, ADHD, deaf, learning disabled, and other health impaired. I have special education certification in Florida and Mississippi. I am currently working on a special education certification for the state of Alabama. I am also ESOL certified in Florida and Mississippi.

Through my experience as an elementary school teacher I have developed many strategies that I can use to help all students be successful.

I have taught common core standards for the majority of my career and have attended multiple workshops on implementing the common core standards.

I look forward to meeting with your child and developing a plan to meet their goals for the school year.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have worked with many students dealing with ADD and ADHD. I am a certified special education teacher and have attended many workshops on helping these students be successful.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I am currently a special education teacher for Huntsville City Schools. I manage a caseload of 20 students of which half are autistic. I have attended many trainings on how to work with students of autism.

Elementary (K-6th)

I feel that I am qualified to tutor elementary students as I have been a elementary teacher for the past ten years. I am also a certified teacher in K-6 in Alabama and Mississippi. I have worked for ten years with many different age groups and have tutored many students in after school programs. When working with elementary students it is very important to first assess what they already know and develop an instruction plan to help them meet their goals.

Phonics

I am also a certified teacher in K-6 grades. I feel that my experience in teaching phonics based reading instruction for the past three years will qualify me to tutor students in phonics. In addition I have designed phonics assessments to measure student gains and have used the data from these assessments to improve phonics skills.

Reading

I have been a teacher for 11 years and have worked with struggling readers for all of them.
