About Alan

My objective is to assist you in developing a firm understanding of basic physical phenomena. I believe the best way to master and retain class material is to work through exercises, starting from the most simple, and building toward ever more sophisticated applications of the same physical laws. When you do this, tests cease to become a source of anxiety, especially when you first see “new” unexpected problems. I want you to be able to say to yourself, after reading the problem statement on a test, “Oh yes, I know the physics that applies here.” Usually, if you can do this in a high school or undergraduate course, you are 80%-90% there for a solution (by the way - 90% is an “A” – but you’ve got to do the math too).

My areas of knowledge cover classical to modern physics, mathematics and computational methods (like you would use on a computer). I am a career scientist with a goal to transition to full time teaching. I hold Bachelors, Masters and a Ph. D. in physics (Doctorate is in nuclear science). I have worked in industry and for the U.S. Government (NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy), applying my physical knowledge in various ways in the defense sector, as well as astrophysics and nuclear science. More recently, I have taken graduate level refresher courses in electromagnetic devices and optics, and nano-science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. I also taught an in-house course on astrophysical instrumentation and space physics at my place of employment.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
