I started out helping my younger siblings with their Math homework and then working as an associate lecturer at the School of Nursing in the town where I lived. I find that in teaching a subject, there should be no constraints on how much to teach. I teach every topic in a way that covers every aspect of the topic. So that any questions that arise on that topic is easily addressed by the student.
Since there is an ongoing conversation between the student and myself, I expect lots of questions (while teaching) and in answering those questions, I relate the topic being taught to everyday activities. I have very high expectations of my students. I believe, (and I have been proved right) that if I teach you any subject, you should be able to turn around and teach it to someone else as well using your own examples. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
