Hi! I am a patient and friendly tutor that will work with students to help master a given area of study. As students have various levels of understanding on a specific subject, I first try and find out what your current level is so I can adjust the tutoring sessions accordingly. I am very good at helping students understand concepts and the broader picture when relevant. I help students learn to solve problems on their own by breaking the problems down into simpler steps and showing how problem-solving methods can be applied. I make sure students really understand how to solve problems by working through examples with them.
I have a bachelor's degree in physics and a master's and PhD. in astrophysics. I have much knowledge in mathematics and the physical sciences that I can make available to students. I also have extensive knowledge in history and social studies as these have always been passions of mine. I have taught students at various levels from elementary school to the high school and college level and successfully helped students prepare for the ACT and SAT tests. Hi! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The math portion of the ACT consists of mainly of word problems, algebra, geometry, probability, statistics and logic. There are 60 questions to be answered in 60 minutes. I review practice tests with students and help them learn to solve the math problems in an accurate, efficient and confident manner. I go over the various concepts and skills needed for each type of problem and focus on the areas where the student is having the most difficulty. Tutoring and practice will greatly improve your score on this section of the ACT and I can help you with that.
The science portion of the ACT involves several types of scientific and logical reasoning. There are 40 questions to be answered in 35 minutes. There are passages about a particular subject and then several questions that involve reasoning involving graph reading, scientific deduction, interpretation of experimental results and other skills. I help the student learn to read and understand these passages and how to use reason and logic to answer the questions in a correct and confident manner. We review the needed skills such as graph interpretation, understanding tables of data and prediction and deduction to significantly improve your science score on the ACT.
