About Karen

I am an Academic Coach who completed an Educational specialist degree at Liberty University specializing in Teaching and Learning in May 2011. My educational philosophy is a combination of Bloom's Taxonomy and the Taxonomy of the Significant learning Experience (SLE); believing that learning must allow for repetition and application of that which was taught so that information moves from mere memorization to actual learning. The role of the educator must go beyond the responsibility of dispensing knowledge and tests, to creating an environment which would inspire and motivate others to learn, which can only occur in an environment of mutual respect and a basic belief that all students are capable of learning. This is what forces the educator to discover the method in which the learner will be the most successful. Overall, education is a balancing act whereby educators provide a positive influence, leading and guiding students down a path of discovery; while at the same time ensuring that learners obtain the knowledge, skills and moral development necessary to positively contribute to society.

I have extensive experience in the following areas: Elementary Education, Algebra, Biology, Physical Science, study skills including time management, goal setting, and organization, Microsoft Office - word, excel and PowerPoint, Public Speaking, and Communications. While instructing in GED preparation, I have also taught coursework in reading and essay writing. In addition, I work with individuals of all ages with ADHD, teaching them and their caregivers strategies which would increase learning efficiency.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I recently completed an Ed.S. at Liberty University. My research interests included ADD/ADHD, Talented and Gifted Learners, and Adult and Returning Learners. In addition to my academic credentials, I am also a mother of two special needs children.

I am Educational Specialist, Academic Coach and Math Instructor. I also have a Masters in Adult Learning.

Bible Studies

I am an Ordained Minister (since 2008) and a graduate (Ed.S.) of education (from a Christian perspective) from Liberty University which is a Christian university. I have also taught Bible studies and Life Empowerment groups within the church environment for over the last 10 years. In addition to teaching from a biblical perspective, I also hold Women's meetings and write a monthly devotional for a "Knitted Together by God".

Career Development

Through my business as a Life Transitions Coach, I help individuals through the lifelong process of managing learning, work, leisure, and transitions in order to move toward a personally determined and evolving preferred future. I have been doing this work since 2006 and have been Certified as a Professional Life Coach since 2013.

College Counseling

As a Life Transitions Coach, I also help students who are transitioning from GED or High School to College. In my college transitions workshop entitled Confident Learning, I also teach students tools which would help them to be successful in college such as how to choose a major, choosing the right college, how to register for courses, FAFSA and student loan application requirements, procedures, and responsibilities, time management, developing a study plan and schedule, etc. All students are also introduce to the world of academic writing and understanding college "lingo".

When I went to school handwriting was an important subject. As an Academic Coach I also teach handwriting (including cursive) to all my students. Microsoft PowerPoint

I have worked in the administrative/clerical field for over 21 years, and have used the Microsoft office products during that time. , I also conducted workshops for a retired community of Nuns for seven years on all facets of computers including the Microsoft Office products.

Tutoring will reinforce mathematical skills taught in the earlier grades with additional advanced computation including an emphasis on Algebraic concepts. Students will study fractions, decimals, percents, positive and negative integers and rational numbers; and become more proficient in using ratios, proportions and solving algebraic equations. ADHD and organization

Karen was really helpful. My son has ADHD and very unorganized. She had great ideas on how to start helping him focus on task. It's very difficult to understand how ADHD kids think. And Karen did a great job teaching us how.
