Masters in Math and Physics, 15+ Yrs Teaching/Tutoring College andH.S.
I hold two master's degrees -- one in applied mathematics, one in physics. I started teaching math in 1999. While many of the intervening years saw me as a part-time adjunct instructor of mathematics, I did enjoy a full-time appointment to the math faculty of Alabama A&M University for 5 of those years. I have also used my skills in industry and government, most notably at NASA and Intergraph.
I've taught just about every undergraduate math course and tutored some graduate ones, too. I...

Best tutor I've ever had
Joy helped me get through Cal I- Cal III, discrete math, matrices and linear algebra, applied probability and statistics, differential equations, and abstract algebra. Her teaching style really helped me grasp things I couldn't understand during lectures (hands on do it yourself). I don't think I would have done half as good as I did in all of the above mentioned classes without her help. She is a great tutor and even better person, I would recommend her to anyone needing help in any subject involving mathematics.

Outstanding!
My son has been working with Joy for a couple of months on AP calc BC. He looks forward to meeting with her because she is able to answer his many questions patiently and with a wonderful, positive spirit. We also appreciate that she was willing to juggle working with him despite his complicated schedule. Highly recommend!

Helpful and engaging
Joy is really engaging and makes learning interesting. She also tailors the lessons to what I need. I’ve also had to shift some times temporarily due to travel and she was flexible. Thanks!

Very smart and quick
My son, who met with a number of Calc tutors, described Joy as “very smart and quick” and immediately wanted to meet with her again. She was also very responsive.

Passed Calc
I have always been terrible at math, I actually failed this class twice then I finally decided I needed some help. Joy explained it in a way I understood. She helped me so much, I was able to pass the class and graduate!! Thank you so much Joy!

Highly knowledgeable and patient Calculus tutor
Ms. Joy has been teaching me College Calculus I. I am so happy to have found her on Wyzant. She is very knowledgeable and thorough on all Calculus topics. She can explain to me any doubt on the spot. She is well versed with the calculus content and breaks down the steps in very easy understandable format. She has made Calculus I very easy for me. I would highly recommend her as a tutor for anyone who is struggling with Calculus.

Able to teach the "why"
Our 14 -y.o. was perfectly capable of plugging in the equations to get the correct answers, but Joy has helped him fully understand why those are the correct equations and how to use them in other applications. He has even asked for additional sessions because he's found her explanations so helpful.

Great tutor!
I was having trouble understanding how to determine which type of distribution to use from word problems and she helped me greatly! I’ll happily book more tutoring sessions with her!

Excellent Math tutor!
Joy has tutored Calculus 3 and Matrix theory for my daughter. She is an excellent tutor! She could clearly explain difficult concepts in a way that the student could easily understand. Her tutoring definitely helped my daughter succeed in her college level Math courses.
