About Dana

Having taught high school and college students for eighteen years, I am comfortable working with most learners. In fact, I consider myself a co-learner in any academic setting. In addition to my familiarity with all things English (grammar, writing, reading), I also am masterful at helping students raise their scores on a variety of standardized tests. Perhaps my greatest asset is my gentle, non-threatening approach to instruction. I delight in my students, my subjects, and my field. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I always have loved to read and write, and somehow my enthusiasm for these areas has helped others to become enthusiastic about them as well. I have a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in English. I have worked as a writer, editor, proofreader, researcher, teacher, and tutor for over seventeen years. Many students I work with say that my knowledge of and passion for English has helped them in a course they were not interested in before. Finally, I have tutored many students for the ACT. I have taught ACT prep courses, and I have helped individuals prepare for the test. Many of my students not only became more confident in their test taking abilities, but they also raised their score on the test, either in one area or overall. This improvement is due to my students' hard work. I simply helped them to get organized in their preparation, and I helped them to study.

Many students I work with say that my knowledge of and passion for English (grammar, writing, reading, vocabulary, etc.) has helped them in courses they were not interested in before. I try to incorporate grammar studies in practical ways when I am teaching it. Learning about grammar while they are reading or writing or even having a conversation about something not connected to school at all allows students to learn concepts (without becoming bogged down with confusing grammatical terms) and master skills. Students also have found that improving their knowledge in this area helps them perform better in all subjects.

Literature

Studying literature should be fun. When I am teaching a literature class or tutoring students in literature, I try to help them find connections between themselves and the stories and characters that they meet. That is where literary analysis begins--that which makes it personal. Once students make this connection, learning about the work becomes much easier. Study Skills

I have taken a number of education courses that address working with students who require help with study skills, such as Introduction to Teaching and Introduction to the Exceptional Learner. When I taught at a High School, I taught study skills in a course called Educational Support Services Program and worked in a learning lab that complemented the program. I worked after school with students who needed extra help in this area. We would try different strategies such as using a planner and color coding the planner. We organized lockers and backpacks. I tried a little bit of everything to help my students who are so smart but just a little disorganized.

Wonderful! — Dana is a wonderful and creative tutor. My teenager loves to go to his sessions with her. We started with Dana to help my son with his ACT. She has worked with him to improve his scores. However, because of her creative energy and love of writing, she has also inspired him to write more and helped him to expand his horizons in reading. * Update: He took the ACT and his score improved. ...
