Doris was on time, patient and throughout the session asked if I had any questions. She had some examples of prepared spreadsheets she completed for review. I look forward to our next session.
I have asked Doris to help me prepare for a job interview that I will encounter the first of next year, and not only has she motivated me to work hard to excel, she has also given me great advice to perform well during this meeting.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have more than twenty-two years of knowledge, skills and experience in Business Management techniques. This includes developing integrated improvement strategies, business process improvement and documentation, employee development and recognition strategies, as well as customer satisfaction and loyalty strategies and techniques. My skills and knowledge have also been honed through my work with the Michigan Quality Leadership Award (MQLA) Program. During the nine years I was involved in this program I served as an official Examiner that assessed the overall performance of local businesses that submitted comprehensive applications which responded to a detailed set of criteria. I had to go through extensive training over that period to be an effective Examiner. I have used that training to help further my work with other businesses.
I am also a Certified Facilitator of the FastTrac® Entrepreneurial Training Program and Courses. FastTrac® is a series of educational experiences, products, and services that support entrepreneurs who want to start or improve their small businesses. I have been a guest workshop facilitator on Customer Retention Techniques for Small Businesses through the Birmingham Business Resource Center (BBRC) during Small Business week and MedWeek observances.
Career Development is an area that is near and dear to my heart. During my more than 40 years in the world of work (both corporately and as an Independent Consultant), I have learned a great deal about what it takes to be successful - from the research involved in the job search, preparing the resume and cover letter, to completing the job application, to preparing for and completing the interview (from both sides of the table), to getting and keeping the job.
Successful career development is very much a personal responsibility we all must accept if we are to advance in the work place. In today's work environment, the employees that understand this are more likely to grow and advance. Furthermore, it is no longer enough just to know your specific job responsibilities, you need to know how your job relates to the company's goals (what are the company's goals?). Technical skills alone are no longer enough. No one wants to work with a highly skilled person who can't get along with anyone. This is why successful employees are also savvy in the interpersonal and social skills. These are areas that I can help the potential or current employee develop. I provide private tutoring in this area. If you want to improve your chances of advancement in the workplace, allow me to work with you to uncover your strengths and areas to improve. Please contact me if this is an area you are struggling with.
I have used Desktop Publishing for a number of projects (both for business and personal). I have used this software to successfully create flyers, brochures, business cards, banners, labels, name cards and award certificates. Using Microsoft Publisher and Print Master desktop publishing software will give any project a professional look that helps to create a reputation for being serious about your work and how it represents you.
I can help you create professional documents that you will be proud to use. If you need help in this area, please contact me.
English covers a number of areas--reading, writing, grammar, comprehension, proofreading, and more. I have been tutoring in this area for more than four years at my church and on a one-on-one basis (upon request). My approach is to begin by determining in what area the student is having the most trouble. For example, some of my younger students have problems with comprehension (does the student understand what he/she has read?). I will have him/her read a passage or, perhaps the entire piece and then discuss what the writer's intentions were. What was the intended message? How do we figure this out?
Some students have a limited vocabulary. In this case we will develop a list of terms (words, phrases, etc...) that they need to learn. We then include those words in writing sentences, or we will highlight them as we read and stop to discuss how they impact what we are reading or writing.
There is much more to becoming proficient in English and if you need help in this area, I can work with you to improve.
I have more than thirty plus years working with computers. They have been an integral part of every corporate and non-corporate position I have had. They are an essential tool for my consulting and training work. As a former Computer Programmer, Business Analyst, and Project Manager, I have worked with all levels of computer systems. I have also used my computer skills to help the students I work with during the four years that I have been a part of the Tutoring Program at my church. I work with others one-on-one as well. If you need assistance understanding how computers work and the essential role they have in our world today, I can help you. I have a positive, patient, and non-judgmental approach that will put you at ease.
I have more than fifteen years of experience using Microsoft Excel in my work as a Consultant and Trainer. This product is a wonderful tool for creating and maintaining simple to complex spreadsheets. The built-in formulas and its link to the other Microsoft products in the Office Suite make it easy to use. I have used it to create products for my clients as well as for my own personal use. I have also worked one-on-one with others who have had to create spreadsheets for their school assignments. This tool can also be used to help create address labels, surveys, and budgets, to name a few. I have created all of these products and much more. If you are in need of help developing any of the many kinds of products available through Excel, I am here to help.
I have used PowerPoint for more than twenty years as a Consultant and Trainer. I have used PowerPoint to develop numerous training sessions, workshops and formal presentations. This is a powerful tool that provides an excellent way to communicate effectively with any audience. When I work with students in the Tutoring program at my church, PowerPoint is often used to help me teach them about life skills (Interpersonal Skills). PowerPoint is dynamic and works well with other Microsoft products (Excel, Publisher, and Word). If you need help understanding how to use PowerPoint, please contact me, I would love to work with you.
Microsoft Word is a critical tool for me as a Consultant and Trainer. I use this software to complete numerous tasks related to my work; this includes letters, labels, flyers, training documents, and many other documents based on the need. I have also used this tool to help the students I have tutored for more than four years with my church. I have done a great deal of proofreading for others to help them improve their writing skills using Microsoft Word. If you need help learning how this tool can benefit you, please contact me. I am dedicated to helping you succeed!
As a Consultant and Trainer, I must communicate both orally and written. This is especially important when I am developing training content. Therefore, I have to pay close attention to grammar, sentence structure, but even more importantly, I must pay attention to how the writing flows. Am I getting my point across? Have I written clearly and succinctly? These are areas you will need to focus on in your applications as well. Let me help you with this.
Just the thought of being in front of a group of people, especially strangers, is enough to make some of us weak with fear. Even those of us who must speak or present to others on a regular basis will sometimes feel that sudden churning sensation in the pit of our stomachs. How do some people make public speaking seem so easy? How do they appear to be so comfortable doing this? Are they that much smarter than us? Is there some special gene they carry that makes public speaking so easy for them (at least that is the way it appears)? Not really. However, there are some common characteristics they all share. What are these characteristics you ask? Let me share a few of them with you.
1. They are very well versed in the subjects or topics they talk about.
2. They have a good understanding of the audiences they are addressing and how to reach them.
3. They don't just present information, they tell stories.
4. They are passionate about the information they are sharing.
4. They practice, practice, practice.
5. They know how to engage their audiences (interact with them).
I could go on, but I think you get the idea. The great thing about the above is we can all improve these skills with training, practice and commitment. The next time you need to speak before a group of peers, strangers, or anyone else, think about:
- The topic (how well do you know it?)
- The audience (who are they?)
- Your communication skills (non-verbal communication skills are just as important as verbal communication skills)? Some communication skills are critical to effective public speaking. Contact me and we can talk about it.
Reading has always been an important part of my life. This is a skill that I consider to be a foundation to all other skills. I have used my skills in this area to tutor students for the past four years in the Tutoring Program with my church (grades 4 - 12). I have also provided these services as part of my work in Junior Achievement’s Business Partnership Program with a former employer. I worked in that program for more than three years. Being an effective reader is fundamental to success in today’s world. If you need help in this area, I can assist you.
As a Business Consultant and Trainer for more than 22 years, I have often needed to utilize my planning skills to get work done. I have also worked with the Tutoring Program at my church for four years. During this time I have helped my students learn the importance of planning ahead when it comes to studying. I teach them how important it is to be prepared with the materials they need to study (books, assignments, paper, pens, etc...) and the need to remove distractions when they study. I tutor students from the 4th through 12th grades in English, reading and writing. Most of these students have needed assistance with developing good study skills to help them improve their grades. One of my former students came back the year after he graduated to let me know he had passed all the required tests to get his diploma. He thanked me for helping him during our tutoring sessions.
