I am a former Cancer Biologist who has taught undergraduate biology and biomedical sciences classes at UAB and Birmingham-Southern. I have a great passion and gift for teaching that I am happy to share with anyone that I can help. I worked for nine summers at a local camp teaching classes on subjects that I knew well and that I was learning from experts as I taught. Learning is an important life skill. When you learn "how to learn," any subject becomes much easier. I am happy to help you learn to pass a test or course - but more importantly I would like to help make your future studies easier and more enjoyable. I am willing to help in a variety of subjects at the elementary, middle high school or college level in addition to my expertise in language/communication and science at the collegiate level.
I graduated cum laude from Birmingham-Southern with a major in biology. I took general chemistry, organic chemistry, cellular and molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, and other biomedical courses. I prepared for the MCAT initially but decided that being a doctor was not for me. I have enjoyed conducting research as we all being a teaching assistant in undergraduate and graduate schools. I began work on my Ph.D. in Cancer Biology in 2012 but decided to leave early following a medical leave of absence. For a short period of time, I worked as a full-time Realtor, representing both owner-occupants and investors. I returned briefly to the lab in 2018. My projects have involved molecular biology, cell biology, animal models of disease, disease pathophysiology, drug resistance, immunology, genomics, metabolism, biochemistry, microbiology, bioinformatics and metabolomics.
I studied French for four years in high school and completed my minor in French at Birmingham-Southern. I conducted two independent research projects on the role of English and French language in the development of Quebecois society and Quebecois/Canadian language laws. I have a passion for teaching and enjoy learning the relationship between English and other languages (particularly middle French, German, Latin, and Greek). Foreign language is simply learning how people of another culture communicate. My wife is an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter, and I enjoy learning about deaf culture and communication. The best way to learn another language is immersion. This can be miserable if you don't have good support or if you aren't really interested in living in a foreign country. Alternative learning methods should be adapted to the goal of the student and their learning style - memorization, association, story/scenario based communication, etc. Let's develop a plan that matches you!
Writing is just another form of communication. Learning the nuisances of the style appropriate for a specific type of paper or audience is key to sounding articulate and enticing your reader. I developed a scientific methodology and writing course for undergraduates and have helped numerous friends and colleagues with writing - from academic papers to grants, biosketchs to website articles and PR pieces. My ASL sign name is even a writing "W." If you want help proofreading or learning how to write (style, grammar, formatting, etc.), let's talk (or write)!
History was my best subject through middle and high school. In French, the word for history and "story" are the same. Anyone who wants to learn or understand the past should approach history with the same philosophy. All of the dates, names, and places are just bits of information about the past. They are important only to help shape our understanding of the present and the future. The ideas and institutions that existed in the past are best conseptualized as stories. When you learn how to view history as stories in the context of specific themes, the "memorization" comes much easier and you are better prepared for writing assignments and essay/short answer questions. I made a 5 (top score) on the AP American History exam in high school by using this learning philosophy rather than studying for the exam.
I love teaching. My mother was an Elementary classroom teacher and speech language pathologist. My father teaches safety and industrial efficiency. I grew up with a love of learning and it is something that I am happy to share with anyone looking for help. Once you learn how to learn and enjoy the process, it becomes easier to learn - even if it is a subject that you don't initially find interesting. I like working with students of any age or background - provided that they are willing to learn. Teaching is a gift. I'd be happy to share it with you!
