About Nicole

I'm from Birmingham, Alabama and I'm a senior at the University of North Alabama (Roar Lions!). My majors are in Cell/Molecular Biology and Professional Chemistry, with a minor in Mathematics. During my time at UNA I have been very involved on campus from SGA to the American Chemical Society, and out of everything I have done tutoring has been, by far, my favorite activity. I used to tutor chemistry at UNA, and now I'm wanting to tutor more than just college students.

I know from personal experience that a tutor can make a difference in someone's life. In high school, I had a math tutor who truly encouraged me and challenged me to do my best, and without her I probably wouldn't be where I am today. I want to influence someone's life like my math tutor did for me; I full heartily believe that anyone can get an "A" in a course, it sometimes takes a little work to get there. A side from keeping my nose in a book, I enjoy walking my dog, drinking coffee, and reading about infectious diseases.

I have taken college classes in every subject that I tutor and have done well in them. I have been approved by UNA to tutor in these areas. Also I am currently conducting research in the genetic/molecular field, so if there are questions that are harder to answer I have the resources to find the correct answer.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Genetics

I'm currently a Cell/Molecular Biology major. Also I am conducting genetic research with Dr. Tina Hubler in FKBP51 and FKBP52 gene expression and its relationship to cortisol sensitivity in new and old world primates. Along with that I have taken a college level Genetics course and successfully passed it. Through my experience of being in a genetics class I have learned that the best way to teach that subject is to start big (the central dogma) and then go smaller from there (the process of transcription and translation, mutations, etc.). I would also use easy to understand metaphors to help explain more complex processes.
