I taught first, second and fourth graders in the Arlington Independent School District for forty-one years. Since retiring, I have been hired as a tutor for first and second graders in reading and math at elementary schools in Arlington. I have also done a limited amount of tutoring through a private foundation in Fort Worth.
I am the type of person who enjoys people. I have a track record of successfully working with parents. From my experience, I believe that it is essential for a child to master the fundamentals of learning in the first few grades in order to be successful in the years ahead. Once a child is behind in academic skills, it tends to lower self esteem and causes a variety of social issues. This needs to be addressed as early as possible.
I use Systematic Sequential Phonics and Words Their Way with beginning readers. I have leveled readers to accommodate students at their own ability level. I have testing materials to determine a student's developmental level and to set expectations. For children who need to develop comprehension skills , I focus on teaching a child through the analysis of reading passages. I also address weaknesses in written expression through a systematic approach both in the writing of fiction and non-fiction.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Louisiana State University and have had many hours of specialized trading through my school district.
I have a great deal of patience and love to work with children in order to build academic strength. I find that to be very rewarding. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught students in grades one and two for over forty years. With this experience, I focused on teaching manuscript with a structured approach. I then monitored my students to make sure that they were implementing this method.
I have attended many hours of teacher training through the Arlington Independent School District on the various methods to teach children to read. I am also currently employed by that district as a reading tutor. Most of my experience is in teaching first and second grades where there is an emphasis on using phonics to teach reading.
I have many years of experience and each year I was required by Arlington ISD to attend additional hours of teacher training. I am certified to work with learners with reading difficulties.
I have many years of experience in teaching children to spell.
