About Kim

I am a certified teacher in language arts and special education in two states, and I have a master's degree in differentiated instruction. For 12 years I have taught classes in essay writing, research paper writing, literature, reading improvement, and study skills in Grades 6 through 12 in both private and public schools. As a learning specialist and special education teacher, I created educational plans, individualized curriculum, and designed interventions for students. Before following my calling as a teacher, I had a career as a newspaper reporter and freelance journalist In addition to my M.Ed. degree, I hold a BA in Mass Communication/Journalism.

Writers communicate through their work, and that's the perspective from which I teach literature, composition, and the study of English. It's more than mastering rules and mechanics or memorizing literary terms. It's delivering a message so others can understand, which is a skill for life. I have focused on that "big picture" and the specific details in all my teaching experiences, which have included reading and writing improvement courses, inclusion literature and composition classes in World, American, and British Literature, and a news reporting course as college adjunct faculty.

My work is student-centered, and I teach to meet the student's needs. My students improve through direct, step-by-step instruction combined with thinking and memory strategies. I have taught students with learning disabilities, reading disabilities, dyslexia, ADHD, ADD, Asperger syndrome, mild autism, motivation, anxiety, and other special needs.

If you struggle with writing, reading, understanding literature, staying organized or remembering what you have learned, I am the tutor for you! As a former journalist, I know writing and the language arts, and as an experienced, certified teacher, I know how to teach them. I'm also a trained online teacher and love tutoring virtually. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a certified special education teacher in two states and hold a Master of Education degree in Differentiated Instruction. For more than a decade, I have taught self-management techniques to students with ADD/ADHD, along with addressing study skills and organization. I also have developed and implemented strategies and accommodations that help students with ADD/ADHD be successful in the general education classroom. I can help your student learn to recognize and manage his or her focus and attention deficits and implement strategies that will help him or her become a better student.

Aspergers

I am a certified special education teacher in two states and hold a Master of Education degree in Differentiated Instruction. I have taught students with Asperger's syndrome for 12 years in both private and public schools. I can help your student learn to maximize his or her strengths.

Autism

I am a certified special education teacher in two state and hold a Master of Education degree in Differentiated Instruction. I have taught students with Asperger's syndrome and mild autism for 12 years in both private and public schools. I can help your student learn to maximize his or her strengths.

Dyslexia

I am a certified special education teacher in two states and hold a Master of Education degree in Differentiated Instruction. I have taught students with dyslexia and reading disabilities for 12 years in both private and public schools. I work primarily with older students (Grades 6 and up) who have some basic reading skills, but still struggle with digraphs and diphthongs, multi-syllable word decoding, fluency, and/or reading comprehension. I use various learning strategies and programs, such as Rewards and Barton Reading, with a step-by-step approach targeted to student learning preferences.

English

Writers communicate through their work, and that's the perspective from which I teach literature, composition, and the study of English. It's more than mastering rules and mechanics or memorizing literary terms. It's delivering a message so others can understand, which is a skill for life. I have focused on that "big picture" and the specific details in all my teaching experiences, which have included reading and writing improvement courses, inclusion literature and composition classes in World, American, and British Literature, and a news reporting course as college adjunct faculty. I'm a certified English language arts teacher and have taught literature and composition classes in middle and high school for more than a decade. I teach vocabulary development, speaking skills, reading comprehension, understanding literature, writing, and grammar.

Grammar

I've taught grammar and mechanics for many years as a certified language arts teacher and a former editor. My students learn to construct correct sentences and avoid, spot, and fix errors that interfere with their written work. By using the students' own writings and various tools, checklists, and memory devices, I help them understand the parts of speech, phrases and clauses, capitalization and punctuation rules, sentence diagramming, and more. I can even make grammar fun with drawings, sayings, songs, and puzzles!

Literature

Literature, to me, is the sharing of the human experience, and that's how I teach it. I've taught novels, short stories, poetry, and non-fiction in Grades 8 through 12, including World, American, and British Literature. I help students make sense of the works by putting them in the context of their times and their authors' lives, examining how they are written, and relating their messages to life today.

Reading

I work primarily with older students (Grades 6 and up) who have some basic reading skills, but still struggle with digraphs and diphthongs, multi-syllable word decoding, fluency, and/or reading comprehension. I am a certified special education, language arts, and reading teacher who has taught reading improvement classes in middle school and high school for more than a decade. I use various learning strategies and programs with a step-by-step approach targeted to student learning preferences.

Special Needs

I am a certified in Special Education teacher in two states and hold a Master of Education degree in Differentiated Instruction. I have taught students with special needs for 12 years in both private and public schools. I have designed academic skills improvement programs in language arts, including reading and writing, and differentiated instruction for special needs students to be successful in the general education classroom. I am more than familiar with IEPs, behavior improvement plans, transition plans, accommodations and modifications, and can provide the extra help many students with disabilities need to keep up in the general education classroom.

Study Skills

I have been teaching students study skills for more than 12 years as a certified special education teacher and language arts teacher in two states. I have used the SOAR program, and I have made personalized plans for organization, daily class preparation, homework, and behavior for students. I use cognitive strategies and mnemonics to help students learn and remember steps so they know what to do when given assignments and how to think about them. I have taught strategies such as the Leitner flash card method, Cornell two-column note taking, keyword association, and use of various graphic organizers and planners. I also have a master's degree in differentiated instruction, meaning I know how to make content, products, and processes better meet student's needs. I also provide tools that can help students make sense of concepts and assignments.

Writing

I am a former journalist turned educator. I have taught students who struggle with writing essays, research papers, and other compositions how to work through the writing process efficiently and effectively. I use a step-by-step approach that helps the student think about what he or she is writing, organize ideas, develop a thesis and support, elaborate with facts and details, and open and close the piece, all with the reader in mind. My approach includes color-coding, graphic organizers, and diagrams, and my students learn what to do and how to do it when writing. I am also proficient in APA and MLA style. I have taught writing in Grades 6 through college for 12 years, including courses in types of essays, research paper writing, and journalism.
