About Kristin

I'm Kristin! I graduated cum laude from Montclair State University with my B.A. in Psychology and certifications in both Elementary K-6 Teaching and Child Advocacy. I worked as a special education aide, providing additional reading and math support to students and have worked closely with both classroom teachers, as well as supplemental teachers to ensure their continued success. My passion for coaching led me to pursue a Master's degree specializing in Sports Performance Psychology. I knew how to physically train my athletes but wanted to learn more on how to mentally prepare them for their athletic careers.

I completed my program, graduating magna cum laude in 2015 and worked alongside my employer to develop a Mental Preparation Program that consisted of goal setting and accountability on parents, coaches, and athletes. Parents of those who participated noticed an increase in performance, both in and out of the sport.

I have Orton-Gillingham (phonics based program) training and have been able to adapt lessons to meet the needs of my students. I have spent the last year tutoring specifically in the Orton & Gillingham method.

We as teachers, are inspirational through the words we speak and the lessons we teach. An outstanding teacher is one that stands out to one student (if not more) for having had some impact on their educational career. Teaching has always been a passion of mine and it is this passion and drive that I take with me into the classroom. Guiding students to be able to achieve their highest potential is something I take great pride in. I have spent numerous hours designing fun interactive lesson plans that both, engage and challenge my students.

I love to learn new information and new techniques to engage students. I encourage communication and suggestions on both the parents and the students end as well.

I have worked with programs such as Enivisions Math, Math Trailblazers, etc.

I have worked with several reading programs and have knowledge of IRLAs and DRAs.

I am familiar with Common Core, as this is what my former district followed for their curriculum.

I have had Google Apps for Education training and believe that the implementation of technology can be extremely useful in a child's education, when implemented in the correct way.

I hold a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing in NJ state K-6 qualified and AL K-6 Highly Qualified Teaching certification.

Learning should be fun! So let's sit down and see what we can work on together!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

During my undergraduate studies, I spent several courses in linguistics/psycholinguistics in an effort to understand Dyslexia further. I have worked as a special education aide and tutored several students with Dyslexia. I have been Orton & Gillingham trained, a program used students who have Dyslexia.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold an NJ Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing Elementary K-6 Teaching. I worked for 5 years in two school districts as both a one one one aide and a special education aide.

I also am Highly qualified in the state of Alabama and hold a valid Elementary K-6 Teaching Certification. I have been tutoring a 6th grade student with Dyslexia in Orton & Gillingham over the past year.

Handwriting

I have experience working with preschool students, as a lead classroom teacher, teaching them the basics of letter formation. As a certified teacher, I worked in public schools where handwriting / cursive was part of the curriculum. I was often tasked, as the aide, to give weekly handwriting lessons. In addition, my Orton & Gillingham training is also designed to help students with letter formation.

Phonics

I am a licensed Elementary K-6 teacher in both NJ and AL. I am highly qualified in the state of Alabama. In addition, I have received Orton & Gillingham training (30 hours). In addition, I have worked with programs such as Words their Way and Wilson. I have spent the past year tutoring a 6th grade student in Orton & Gillingham.

Reading

I am a certified Elementary K-6 teacher in both NJ and AL. I am also Orton & Gillingham trained. I have worked as a special education aide, where I provided extra reading, writing, and math support to students in a one on one / small group setting. I am familiar with most reading programs, and have implemented testing corresponding to reading levels/groups (specifically DRA and IRLA).

Study Skills

I spent a great deal of time in my online master's program, centered around goal setting, accountability, and responsibility. Through taking online course, I was forced to develop a system to help me study and learn on my own.
