About Jan

AREAS OF AVAILABILITY: I am available in Troy, Enterprise, Daleville, Fort Rucker, Ozark, and the Dothan Metro area on selected days/evenings. I am also an online tutor--nationwide, via Wyzant's online platform

I have a heart for teaching children from the preschool years through elementary school, as well as helping others beyond that age-set in certain areas. I have taught in the private-school classroom, as well as home schooled two children, including one of those all through high school. I currently work as a full-time news writer and am award-winning.

It is my heart's desire to lead students into discovery and belief in their own innate abilities. Witnessing their "a-ha" moments as they learn and master subject matter is one of the most rewarding things ever! That being said, a child who struggles or becomes discouraged with learning during the elementary years is set for defeat, and I 100% believe that struggling and/or discouraged learners can be led to succeed no matter what. I have witnessed it from teaching K-4 and up in classrooms as well as my own children. With the right help, children will regain confidence in themselves and actually begin to self-teach.

I believe in looking at each child as an individual and seeking the best way to help each as an individual, unique learner. As a personal tutor, lessons can be individualized and techniques varied for each student. Tutoring is not standardized and never should be. I am experienced in classical methods and 'standard' modes of teaching. In addition, I have multiple years of experience working with various curricula. I look forward to getting to know my students and helping them to succeed in whatever academic area in which they need help.

I am an award winning, working, experienced journalist with a bachelor's degree. I am also a published author and have experience as a corporate marketing director. All of this comes together to give me a unique way of teaching English, writing, and basic computer skills (Microsoft Word and PowerPoint). It has been a natural and easy progression for me and I enjoy passing this knowledge onto others.

All of my students will be challenged and encouraged. An open-door access is my policy. In other words, I will be available for phone calls and emails once our tutor-student relationship is established through the WyzAnt system. This will aid in between full tutoring sessions. I will be happy to travel to my students for tutoring or arrange neutral locations to meet, such as area libraries. Continuous tracking of progress will be done so that the student, parents, teachers, and myself can monitor progress. For some topics I will create video presentations for my students to access any time and for review.

I always welcome parent and student feedback.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have extensive experience working with children who have ADD and/or ADHD -- both in the classroom and at home. I am an experienced elementary school teacher and a a home schooling mom of two children with ADD/ADHD. I am very familiar with the obstacles ADD/ADHD can cause for a learning child and am very adept at finding ways around those obstacles so the learner can become engaged and grasp the subject at hand. Planning strategies, various memorization techniques are employed to work with an ADD/ADHD student and I am confident we will be successful together!

Elementary (K-6th)

I have successfully taught pre-K2, pre-K3, pre-K4, kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade in the classroom. All subjects were taught including phonics, reading, grammar, handwriting, writing/composition, arithmetic, history, and science. Beyond those grades, the same subjects were taught to my two children who were home schooled from 3rd grade through high school. I have used and am very familiar with multiple curricula, including Abeka, Bob Jones University Press, Apologia Science, Veritas Press, Scott Foresman, Shurley English, Latina Christiana, Writing Strands, Reader’s Theater, Zoo Phonics, and Hooked on Phonics. During my career, I have developed and implemented daily and unit lesson plans, administered testing, tracked and analyzed class performance, conducted group and one-on-one math, reading, and writing activities.

Handwriting

I have taught basic printing as well as cursive in Pre-K classes through 3rd grade. I concentrate on modeling letter formation (form and slant), size, and spacing, one component at a time.

Marketing

I have a degree in communications/journalism. I have provided public relations and marketing skills to three private schools that I worked for. This included being interviewed on live radio, for newspaper articles, and even organizing fund raisers and producing promotional products. Most recently, I was the marketing director for an area corporation for which I developed and managed the company website, developed marketing materials, redesigned all company materials, produced complete marketing plans, produced PowerPoint presentations, and created detailed contract proposals. I also redesigned convention materials, display items, and represented the company at state and national conventions, interacting with current customers and prospective customers.

Phonics

Phonics was the primary area taught in the pre-K 4 classes I taught in addition to Kindergarten. I used phonics lessons from curricula such as Bob Jones University Press, Zoo Phonics, Veritas, Abeka, Shurley Grammar, etc.

Reading

Study Skills

As a teacher and professional with a college background, I have developed my own study skills over the years and taught children how to better study. I have used everything from association techniques, to music, memorization via flashcards, and games to both learn things myself and to help others learn.
