About Tucker

Hi there! My name is Tucker. I graduated summa cum laude from Mississippi State University with a degree in Sociology, and a minor in Philosophy. After I graduated, I moved to Sacramento to work in a high needs high school with Algebra 1 students who needed some extra support to pass the class. Before that, I was spending time with students who were behind an academic grade level in school, and also tutoring students in reading at a local Boys and Girls Club.

I love to learn, and I love to help people learn. My specialties are middle and early high school Math, especially Algebra 1, and English, though I do it all, and ACT and SAT test prep as well. I'm flexible in my availability; if you need some help during that late night cram session the night before your midterm, I'm your guy. Online meetings work best for the time being, and my base rate is $35/hour. That said, package deals are available if you're interested.

Algebra 1, Geometry, SAT Math.

I look forward to working together in the future!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

On a very superficial level, I had to take College Algebra to earn my bachelor's degree. However, on a deeper level, I've just finished spending a year working in a high-needs high school in an Algebra 1 classroom. While I was there, I spent time with small groups of 1-6 students at a time who were behind in Algebra 1, providing curriculum and instruction which gave them a chance to succeed by catching up to the pace of the class. Through this experience, I gained the skills to work with a spectrum of students, from young people who grasped the material immediately to young people who needed a few extra problems to jump to that next level of mastery.

Bible Studies

I minored in philosophy of religion in college. I have been studying the Bible for years as a Christian, but am familiar with the critical interaction with the Biblical text from the Historical-Critical school as well. I will be starting divinity school in the fall of 2016 at Beeson Divinity School, so as time wears on, I will be even more prepared. Some classes I took in college on the subject of the Bible included Systematic Theology and Pauline Theology.

Social Studies

My undergraduate degree is in Sociology. Additionally, many of the electives I took needed to be in some other field of social studies. I have been exposed to many different teaching techniques as regards social studies instruction, and I am confident in my ability to tutor as a student who had to do and analyze original research.
