About Robert

The most exciting and rewarding parts of teaching for me are the moments when a student who has been studying and working hard, but still struggling with a concept or type of problem, has the "Aha!" moment; the moment when I can see that look of understanding and comprehension light up the student's face. I have seen the same look in students of all ages and backgrounds. It is a thrilling moment for the student, of course, but also for me, because I know that this is the start of that student increasing in both their ability and confidence to learn and succeed academically.

In many years of teaching and tutoring students from elementary and secondary grades to college students, I have been blessed and lucky to see that look and take that journey with many students. The opportunity to help a student to reach his or her goals and to be successful is the reason that I love teaching and tutoring students. I have an M.Ed in Special Education, in addition to a Bachelor's in Psychology and a Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy. I also have three years experience as a counselor as well as seventeen years as a special education teacher for both elementary and secondary grades. My ACT tutoring experience includes three years as an ACT tutor for Birmingham City Schools Summer Program; training with Kaplan Test Prep; and several students whom I tutored privately.

As a tutor, I am very supportive; and I bring enthusiasm and a positive outlook on student success. I am very flexible and able to work with the variety of personalities and outlooks that students have. As long as a student is committed to doing the work necessary, I truly believe that she or he will be successful.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have tutored a number of students privately on all parts of the ACT (English, Math, Reading, Science) and ACT test-taking strategies in the past several years. I also participated in training from Kaplan to prepare for summer work as an ACT Math tutor, which included ACT strategies which can be applied to all portions of the test. I also made a perfect score on the ACT English Test as a senior in high school.

ACT Math

I have worked as an ACT Math tutor in the Birmingham City Schools Summer Program three years. We received training from Kaplan Test Prep several years ago. In addition, I have tutored several students privately on all parts of the ACT, including Math.

ADD/ADHD

In addition to over seventeen years working with students with disabilities, I have an M.Ed. in Special Education-Emotional Disorders. Other relevant education and experience includes a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, a Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy (both from Auburn University), and three years working as a therapist for the employee assistance service at a large company.

Algebra 1

I have taught basic number and Algebra skills as part of Study Skills, Strategies Lab, and Alabama High School Graduation Exam Math Prep courses.

Algebra 2

I have provided reteaching and remediation to special education students in Algebra II classes for over ten years, in addition to experience teaching and co-teaching Algebra II classes. I have also tutored students privately for the ACT, including ACT Math.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am highly qualified in Alabama to teach all elementary subjects; I made a perfect score on the Praxis Elementary Education content knowledge test. Also I'm state-certified in special education.

Prealgebra

In addition to providing students with remediation and reteaching for Algebra I, I teach Prealgebra and basic number skills as part of my Study Skills and Strategies Lab courses. I have also taught these skills in Alabama High School Graduation Exam and ACT prep courses.

Special Needs

I earned my M.Ed. in special education from Auburn University in 1997. I worked with elementary and intermediate grades for the first four years and with high school students since that time. I have taught students with a variety of disabilities and challenges, including learning disabilities, behavioral issues, autism, and attention deficit/hyperactivity.

Study Skills

I have taught numerous Study Skills and Strategies Lab classes, which focus on helping students improve study and test-taking skills.
