About David

A novelist and freelance writer, I have worked with Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and other Asian speakers of English to improve their spoken and written communications for professional advancement. I have helped established scientists move to such Federal agencies as CDC and FDA and I've edited graduate research papers that went on to win awards and honors. I can understand English spoken in any accent and I enjoy helping non-native speakers become fluently comfortable living and working in the English environment.

With over fifty years of experience in Japanese and Chinese martial arts including aikido and tai chi, I have special affinity for those cultures. I lived in Japan from 1990 to 1995, working as Teacher Coordinator at the Shizuoka City branch of Lado International College of Japan. I'm completely familiar with the Japanese education and work system and I studied the elements that influence Japanese speakers' learning of English and mastery of writing. I taught middle school students and juku sensei using Dr. Robert Lado's principles of learning developed at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Lessons using Dr. Lado's principles create pleasant, easy and effective learning experiences. Let me help you with your English language needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I grew up in a Methodist home and we had nightly Bible readings. I studied Writing and literature in college and read the Bible independently for understanding. I am deeply studied also in Chinese I Ching and Tao Te Ching for cultural balance and perspective. I appreciate the Bible for what it contains and its place in our culture and influence in the world.

Martial Arts

I lived with Aikido meijin, 10th dan Minoru Mochizuki from 1990 to 1992 and trained at his dojo from 1990 to 1995. I've been teaching aikido, judo, karate, jujutsu and Japanese sword since 1978. I operated the first Yoseikan Budo Aikido dojo in North America in 1984. Today, I head the Budo Yoseishin school. I'm available for group and private lessons or seminars.
