About Marcus

Yes, sometimes learning new stuff can be fun and exciting. Other times, however, it can be a little boring. As your tutor, I will use every "trick in the book", every "weapon in my arsenal", and any other relevant cliches, to bring a sense of enjoyment to the learning experience. I get bored easily as well, so I'm always trying to find new ways to increase the "fun" factor and decrease the "boring". I'm always on the lookout for weird, but relevant, facts that will hopefully get my students' attention. I've taught countless students who found astronomy boring. I have not, however, encountered a single student who didn't think it was "so cool" that a person would "spaghettify" upon entering a black hole. The respiratory system can sometimes be a "yawner". I mention, however, that a sneeze travels 100 miles per hour and I've got everyone's attention. I promise to bring this same level of enthusiasm to every subject I teach and to every exam for which I help you or your child prepare.

I have been teaching for over 20 years. Although I've taught grades 1-12, the majority of my teaching experience has been with grades 6-12. Subjects I've taught include math, science, language arts, reading, writing and social studies. I have a Masters Degree in Education and teacher certification in the state of Alabama. The state of Alabama has also deemed me “Highly Qualified” in 5 different teaching areas. I have tutored both privately, and with Sylvan Learning, a commercial tutoring service.

I have years of experience helping students prepare for post-secondary school exams, primarily the GED and ACT tests.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Social Studies

I've taught American History, World History, Elementary and Middle School Social Studies, and Political Science.

Special Needs

I have taught children with Special Needs for over 12 years. Emotional disability, intellectual disability, and specific learning disorder are the areas in which I have the most experience.

Writing

I have taught middle school and high school writing for over 10 years. As a language arts instructor, I spent a considerable amount of time teaching both fiction and non-fiction writing skills. I encouraged creativity by sponsoring school newspapers and literary magazines. I also spent a great deal of time focusing on the technical aspects of non-fiction writing.
