About Stephen

I am currently a graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in Engineering Science and Mechanics from Penn State University, and I am completing my degree remotely while living in Auburn, AL. During my undergraduate and graduate enrollment, I have had several years experience teaching and tutoring undergraduate math and science courses. My undergraduate major at Williams College was Computer Science and I have spent a summer as a software development intern for Microsoft, so I am very comfortable tutoring both computer science in addition to engineering and math. I have received great feedback from students and supervisors in both in the teaching and tutoring of these topics, with many students meeting me regularly as they find themselves continuously improving their understanding.

In addition to my practical experience teaching, I have had held a graduate assistantship at Penn State's teacher development center, where I have learned and taught theory about being an effective teacher and tutor. I realize the importance of listening to what a student knows, how they learn, and what their goals are so as to effectively lead them to those goals. In engineering and the sciences I implement these ideas often by using lots of relevant problems and examples to both engage and motivate students all while teaching them the concepts they need to succeed.

As an interdisciplinary graduate student in an engineering discipline, I have a broad but thorough knowledge of math and sciences, and I believe my teaching and tutoring experience allows me to share that knowledge with students so that they might reach their goals. If you are looking for some assistance with your own study, please contact me so that we can discuss how I can help!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C

I received a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, and several of the courses in the major relied on using C (as well as the extensions of C++ and C#) to implement programs.

C++

I have a bachelor's degree in computer science where many courses required programming in C++. I have also tutored in computer science courses and am familiar with a broad range of computer programming topics.

Calculus

I scored a 5 on both the AP Calculus AB and BC exams, and I have taken collegiate courses in calculus up through multi-variable calculus. I have experience tutoring in pure math calculus courses and also calculus-based physics and statistics courses.

Computer Science

I have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Williams College, and I have one summer of work experience as a software development intern at Microsoft. At Williams, I was a peer tutor for 3 semesters in freshman/sophomore college level courses (Data Structures and Advanced Programming, Computer Organization), tutoring most often in project-based courses with assistance in writing of programs to solve problems.

Discrete Math

Discrete math was a core course I took for my bachelor's degree in computer science. After completing the course with a grade of 'A', I was hired by the Math department as a peer tutor to assist other students taking the course. I worked as a peer tutor for two years, and have worked with students in both math and computer science to help understand concepts from the course including set theory, probability, graph theory, and writing proofs.

Java

I have a bachelor's degree in computer science where many courses required programming in Java, and as a high school student I also took the AP Computer Science A and AB exams, which were Java based. I have tutored several college and high school level computer science courses which included Java in labs and projects, so I am familiar with both the theory as well as the application of the computer science concepts into Java-coded programs.

Linear Algebra

As preparation for my graduate work in engineering, I took undergraduate math courses up through linear algebra and differential equations. During my undergraduate and graduate enrollment, I have had several years experience teaching and tutoring undergraduate math and science courses.

MATLAB

I am a 7th year graduate student in Engineering, and over that time have used MATLAB daily for numerical modeling of natural systems for my thesis research. I have tutored students who are seeing MATLAB for the first time as well as students using MATLAB for applications of numerical methods. In either type of MATLAB course, I focus on guided programming practice to ensure that the student understands the course concepts as well as develops their programming skill.

Physics

As a Ph.D. student in engineering, I have taught and assisted teaching Physics-based engineering courses for undergraduates, such as Statics and Mechanics. As a high school student I took the AP Physics C exam, and scored a 5, so I am familiar with the subject material and the AP test content. When tutoring physics, I use examples to help clarify concepts, and then I focus as much time as possible on working through practice problems to ensure that the students understand both the concepts as well as the applications.

Study Skills

I have experience throughout my academic career working as an academic and ensuring work is completed on time and at high quality. I can help students learn the important study skills, including prioritizing work items, planning ahead, managing time, and best practices in completing and preparing for assignments/tests. We can work together to ensure that the student can fit their academic work into their daily life while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Track & Field

I have competed as a distance runner in cross country and indoor/track and field since elementary schools through high school, undergrad and after, for a total of 20+ years. I competed on my college's DIII NCAA team, and was senior year captain for my college and high school teams, often serving as a mentor for newer runners. I have self-coached successfully since graduating, running sub-elite competitive times at distances 5K through half-marathon.

Amazing, patient, and extremely knowledgeable — Stephen and I went over Java programming. I am completely new at learning this programming language and was feeling a bit overwhelmed. He took me through a programming assignment and explained what we were doing step by step in a way that I could understand. I left the lesson feeling more confident. I can definitely say that Stephen is very talented, professional, and has the utmost of integrity ...
