About Jeff

Hello, although my masters degree is in psychology, I have a deep love for anatomy and physiology classes. Although biology is my minor, I have a 4.0 plus numerous awards in anatomy and physiology classes. I come from a family of teachers and have tutored at Calhoun Community College for years. I am a fun loving and easy person to communicate with. I will go above and beyond what is required to see each student excel.

My experience in tutoring also goes beyond Anatomy and physiology classes. I also worked at Athens state for two years tutoring mainly physiology/psychology or statistics courses and any psychological developmental classes. I finished my B.A. with a 3.7 G.PA. and My Masters with a 3.9.

I received the 2011 Who's Who Award along with the presidents list 5 times and deans list 6 times at Calhoun. I also received two awards in excellence in my microbiology classes and 4 academic scholarships at Athens State. I have mainly worked with students from ages 16-74 in the learning center at Calhoun and Athens State Library and enjoyed the experience immensely. I currently tutor students in writing APA style research and proposal papers for psychology. Also experimental designs. I am very computer orientated in Microsoft office 2016 and PPT, SPSS statistical tools, Blackboard, and integrity videos if needed. My teaching philosophy and approach is designed with the relationship between student and tutor as the most important. My background in my psychology degree and working at the resource center in Athens Alabama has taught me that. I am also currently looking forward to teaching my first adjunct psychology class at Calhoun this fall. I am a respectful and empathetic tutor. It is not always easy for some students and I believe my masters degree in psychology helps tremendously in building that relationship that peaks their interest and keep the subject exciting and fun instead of a chore. My psychology degree also helps with dealing with problem children and ways of getting them interested and other obstacles they may face. I am also currently doing an internship at the Lurleen B. Wallace center working with cognitive development.

My job is to help you get past the learning curve and spend time building a foundation which will enhance you for the rest of your life. Believe me this should not be torture and I will make sure it won't be. My psychology major has been an asset in working with individuals. The degree in its own right stresses the theories that require the relationship between student and tutor to be the most important just as in counseling. Each student is different and the tutor has to start at their speed and cognitive level, Establishing a positive, healthy, and comfortable working environment is the first and most important goal. Students have to be able to relax and be themselves before they can think straight, especially troubled students. Some times a little psychology goes a long way in tutoring. The bottom line is they have to find some kind of reward in investing time to learn it. That is where the tutor comes in. It is the tutor's job to make it interesting and yes even fun. Some people may simply need a tune up on how to learn material and the different approaches that work for them. That is what I seek, not your weaknesses, but your strengths. Everybody has tools, however most people go through their lives never uncovering them. Once you do your whole world and perspective on learning will change. You will find yourself using learning methods in everyday life and may even advance your own career. Learning should not be stressful , but challenging yes. That is where all the fun is. The subject has to be made interesting to the individual or you have lost interest from the start and now it's a job.

Thank you for considering me, Jeff Palmer

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Physiology

I have 32 hours of physiology classes up the 400 level with a 4.0. Also, I have five years of tutoring experience at various campus, learning centers and libraries in the North Alabama and Southern Tennessee area.
