About Cynthia

I have nine years teaching and tutoring experience. Over these nine years I taught the following courses: Creative Writing, First Year College Writing, First Year Research Writing, Global Literature, and Literature for Children at the University of Montevallo and at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.

As a tutor, I help students conquer a wide range of English-language related challenges: writing, grammar, standardized tests, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and study skills. My tutoring style differs from person to person. Two traits that are universal, however, are empathy and ambition. I want pupils to win their battles and move on to new challenges.

I look forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

My subject qualifications include English, writing, creative writing, study skills, grammar, vocabulary, ACT English tutoring, literary analysis, and revision techniques.

English

My subject qualifications include English, grammar, composition, creative writing, study skills, memorization and revision techniques, and analysis.

Literature

I love reading, analyzing, and writing about literature. I have a BA and MA from the University of Montevallo in English literature. I have a MFA from Virginia Tech (located in Blacksburg, Virginia) in creative writing. I am able to tutor students in short stories, novels, and poetry. I've taught World Literature and Literature for Children at the University of Montevallo.

Proofreading

Editing is a part of the writing process that allows students to feel free during the first draft stage of composition. Because editing is always an option up until the final project is submitted, students can relax, knowing that if they make mistakes, these mistakes are easily remedied by editing. One of the best consequences of this sort of writing is that students don't reject ideas before they've tested them. It allows for unique, fresh writing that wins notice.

Spelling

As an avid reader, I have a natural understanding of spelling. In addition to my reading habits, I have a BA and MA in English literature and a MFA in creative writing. Throughout the duration of these programs, I've written, edited, and revised numerous documents. Spelling was a major part of my writing process. I have ten years experience teaching English composition. Consequently, my ability to proofread students' papers is well developed.

Vocabulary

Because I am a professional writer and teacher of English, my vocabulary is large and continually growing. I believe in exploring the history of words through using the Oxford English Dictionary. I understand many ways to memorize words and their definitions.

Writing

I have a MFA in Creative Writing from Virginia Tech. My specialty is poetry. I have five years experience in teaching college level writing. These courses focused on writing essays about literature, current events, and personal situations or memories. I've published two chapbooks and am working on a full-length collection of poetry and a memoir. I love writing and experience has shown that my enthusiasm and creative approaches to writing instruction helps to build students' confidence and proficiency.
