My approach is to help the student discover the answers themselves. This requires patience, which comes easily for me. I give tips and tricks that can help the student later. I am a natural problem solver. I give praise freely and help the student be proud of themselves. I NEVER criticize or belittle a student. I am an encourager and enjoy helping others. My three daughters often came to me for help with homework.
Astronomy, weather, and science are now my hobbies. I always got As in science and was a lab assistant in high school.
I have trained business professionals, computer programmers, and teenagers in sailing small boats. I give presentations at a nature center, lead tours at a historical museum, and have lead nature hikes for Boy Scouts. I served in the U.S. Air Force until 1980, attended Wayne State University and Northern Michigan University.

Michael is a wonderful tutor, both extremely knowledgeable and passionate about Astronomy. I have found his expertise in this topic to vastly exceed that of an average tutor. Michael’s comprehension of Astronomy and his ability to explain concepts range from basic to expert, dependent on the needs of a student. I was also impressed with the visual equipment and websites that Michael provided for our meeting. Five stars out of five! Highly recommended!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Having ADD/ADHD myself and raising a daughter with ADHD gives me plenty of experience helping students in this area. I am very patient and know how to gently keep a child on track. It's so easy for parents to get frustrated trying to help their child study.
I've been an amateur astronomer for 40 years. I also give telescope viewing sessions at a nature center.
I was in the chess club in high school. I usually win every game now.
I have about 20 years COBOL programming experience from working at JL Hudson, AAA, and Kmart. This ranges from the older straight-line programming to the current structured programming. I have given instruction to new programmers at AAA.
I have about 20 years computer programming experience from working at JL Hudson, AAA, and Kmart. This ranges from the older COBOL and IMS DB/DC to SQL/Teradata. I have given instruction to new programmers at AAA.
I've been a computer professional for 30 years. I repair and upgrade my own PC.
Science was always my favorite subject. It is a hobby now. I never stop learning.
I had one supervisor who often asked me to proofread his emails.
I have insatiable curiosity for reading about people, places, science, and history (although I disliked history in school). I am constantly learning new things (now teaching myself to play the bugle). While reading, I easily recognize the focus of the writing and pay close attention to its details.
It helps the student if they see the context of the word, how it is used. Once they can visualize the meaning of the word, the sentence is no longer a mystery and they are no longer "stuck".
