About Nicole

I am a high school science teacher living and teaching in rural Alaska, above the Arctic circle with experience teaching middle school science in Texas and Alaska, as well as high school science in Alaska.

During my undergraduate and graduate programs, I often tutored other college students and high school students. Teaching and tutoring are very rewarding for me because I am able to watch students learn--I love seeing the look in their eyes when they get that lightbulb moment. For me, teaching is about providing a solid foundation of thinking and problem solving skills that equip students to be the most successful.

I look forward to working with students from all over through online tutoring. Contact me if you have any questions or want more info.

I have been studying science since I was in middle school beginning with science fair. After high school I received a BS in Marine Biology followed by a MS in Biology. I also have formal training in teaching as I completed a certification program in Texas. My passion is helping kids learn and succeed.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Botany

As part of my undergraduate degree I completed classes in aquatic botany and marine plant ecology. These courses covered processes such as photosynthesis as well as taxonomy. As part of my graduate degree I took a field botany course which covered local ecology of plants as well as field identification of all varieties of plants.

Genetics

Genetics is covered as part of the biology curriculum that I teach in high school. Additionally I have taken a genetics course as part of my undergraduate degree that covered current genetic lab practices as well as Mendelian genetics, meiosis/mitosis, DNA replication, transcription and translation, epigenetics. In my masters program I took a courses on forensic biology and cell physiology which covered genetic techniques such as fingerprinting, PCR, and sequencing.
