About Nancy

Greetings! Although I studied International Development in college and completed two years toward a Master of International Affairs degree at Columbia University's School for International and Public Affairs, I have spent the past twenty years teaching and tutoring my own children through their elementary and high school years. As testimony of my success, my oldest just completed his first year of college, making straight A's as a computer programming major. Now I would like to use my teaching skills to help others succeed.

In college I also received a minor in music, taking voice, piano, sight singing, and music theory. During the past ten years I have had the privilege to lead church choirs, both with children and adults.

My strengths are in English -- writing, spelling, grammar, and literature; elementary math and algebra; and I can also help in other subjects such as science, history, and classical literature. I especially enjoy working with foreign students, having grown up in a foreign country myself. It would bring me great joy to work alongside you or your child to help you succeed in your educational pursuits.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Science

I tutored the entire ACT test for several students during the school year 2013 to 2014 and the English section of the ACT for international students taking the ACT test for in Montgomery, AL for the full school year of 2014 to 2015. My primary method for tutoring is using the ACT official practice tests available online and using The Real ACT Prep Guide available through Amazon or other vendors. We will work together on understanding the questions and how to arrive at the correct answers by reviewing skills in each subject area and also by learning strategies for developing speed at completing the sections in the time allotted. We will spend our time together primarily reviewing these general topics in addition to covering specific questions on the practice tests that are giving the student trouble.

ADD/ADHD

I give ADD/ADHD children the special attention they need to stay focused on their work. This includes giving them clear expectations, the freedom to be able to move around while learning, and figuring out ways to capture their interest so that learning becomes more fun than a chore. I will also help them to organize their school work in a notebook with checklists or find some other way of giving them a clear reminder of what the expectations are. I will also devise a reward system for completing work accurately or even just for staying focused for a designated period of time. Every child is unique, and I will work with parents to figure out what works best for their child.

Algebra 1

I have tutored my own five children in Algebra 1, and I have also aided them in preparing for the PSAT and SAT tests along with other achievement tests through the years.

Elementary (K-6th)

20 years of experience teaching elementary school to my own 5 children primarily using the curricula recommended by Susan Wise Bauer in "The Well-Trained Mind." These included Usborne history books, keeping a timeline, Spelling Workout, reading classical literature and having them write narrations, Zaner-Bloser grammar books, Apologia Science curricula and also NOEO Science, Saxon Math and later Right Start Math, Writing Strands and more recently Classical Writing. I studied International Development in college and completed two years toward a Master of International Affairs degree at Columbia University's School for International and Public Affairs.

Elementary Math

I taught elementary math to all 5 of my own children through Saxon Math and also the Right Start Math curriculum. The Right Start Math curriculum was my personal favorite. It really focuses on teaching the child to understand the concepts behind the math, rather than focusing on rote memorization. This gives the child the skills they need to really understand math and figure out problems based out of their knowledge, rather than just trying to remember random rules or gimmicks.

English

I have taught English to my own homeschooled children, using the Classical Writing curriculum written by Rene Jaqua and Kathy Weitz through the Diogenes: Maxim and Chreia levels along with Intermediate Poetry. I have also coached writing and grammar, using Harvey's Elementary Grammar, which uses diagramming and parsing as tools. The Classical Writing curriculum also focuses on writing through imitation techniques; rewriting passages in multiple ways (copia); focusing on expanding passages by adding modifiers, phrases and clauses; and reducing passages all the way down to one summary sentence (precis). I have also tutored students preparing for the ACT English, Reading, and Writing tests and the other ACT subjects.

ESL/ESOL

I have experience teaching English as a Second Language mainly to Korean students and young adults. I grew up in South Korea, where I taught ESL in the mid-'80s, and I am currently teaching several Korean students here in the Montgomery area.

Flute

I play flute and have performed in solo (even once on television in South Korea as an elementary student) and in ensemble settings throughout my life. I believe I could effectively teach flute through the beginning and intermediate levels.

General Music

I have conducted children's choirs for churches for several years, made several amateur recordings with my family, and conducted our church choirs over the years.

In addition, I have sung in several community and school choirs through college and completed a minor in music. I play piano proficiently and have worked on music theory, composition, voice, and sight singing at the college level and beyond.

Phonics

I used the Bob Books to teach my children to read. These darling book with simple line drawings are not overwhelming and help the child to feel immediate success. Phonics Pathways was another favorite of mine, beginning with "short-vowel sounds, slowly progressing to whole words, phrases, and sentences of gradually increasing complexity." These two guidebooks and just reading simple books of the student's choosing help propel them into the world of reading.

Piano

I was a piano performance major in college, but in my junior year I changed to an international development major, keeping music as a minor. I took two full years of piano instruction at the college level, completing a sophomore recital and adjudications from the music professors. I also have experience accompanying a high school choir and solo performances both for voice and instruments.

Reading

To teach reading, I like to use a combination of the phonetic approach, using Phonics Pathways, by Dolores Hiskes; the Bob Books, and other age-appropriate beginning readers appropriate to the child's interests. I also encourage adults reading aloud to the child, whether it is parents or teachers. This instills in children a love for reading and helps them to be motivated to learn to read.

Sight Singing

I took sight singing in college, and I have also continued to practice sight singing through participation in various church and community choirs over the years.

Study Skills

I can assist students with note-taking for test preparation and for research papers and guide them in finding the methods that best work for them in memorization and self-testing.

Volleyball

I played volleyball in high school and won Most Valuable Player in a regional tournament during my senior year. I led a volleyball team for homeschool kids several years ago for an 8-week session which everyone enjoyed. I can run drills in setting, serving, bumping (passing), spiking, blocking, and retrieving off the net.

Writing

I have taken writing at the college level and written graduate level papers. In addition, I have learned about the classical methods of writing while teaching my children at home. Grammar, spelling, and syntax are my strengths.
