Greetings! After obtaining a Masters degree in International Affairs (Economic and Political Development concentration), I spent the past twenty years teaching and tutoring my own children through their elementary and high school years. As testimony to my success in this endeavor, my youngest just completed his last year of high school and was accepted at St. Olaf College along with two of his brothers attending there already. Now I would like to use my teaching skills to help others succeed.

In college I majored in International Development and also received a minor in music, taking voice, piano, sight singing, and music theory. During the past fifteen years I have had the privilege to accompany a high school choir, a high school musical production, and lead church choirs, both with children and adults. I have also taught private piano lessons for several years, most recently at a school for music and dance where I had an average of 20 students per week.

My strengths are in Music -- piano and flute; English -- writing, spelling, grammar, and literature; Elementary Math and Algebra; and I can also help in other subjects such as science, history, and classical literature. I especially enjoy working with foreign students, having grown up in a foreign country myself. It would bring me great joy to work alongside you or your child to help you succeed in your educational pursuits.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

20 years of experience teaching elementary school to my own 5 children primarily using the curricula recommended by Susan Wise Bauer in "The Well-Trained Mind." These included Usborne history books, keeping a timeline, Spelling Workout, reading classical literature and having them write narrations, Zaner-Bloser grammar books, Apologia Science curricula and also NOEO Science, Saxon Math and later Right Start Math, Writing Strands and more recently Classical Writing. I studied International Development in college and completed two years toward a Master of International Affairs degree at Columbia University's School for International and Public Affairs.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I taught elementary math to all 5 of my own children through Saxon Math and also the Right Start Math curriculum. The Right Start Math curriculum was my personal favorite. It really focuses on teaching the child to understand the concepts behind the math, rather than focusing on rote memorization. This gives the child the skills they need to really understand math and figure out problems based out of their knowledge, rather than just trying to remember random rules or gimmicks.
Phonics,

Phonics

I used the Bob Books to teach my children to read. These darling book with simple line drawings are not overwhelming and help the child to feel immediate success. Phonics Pathways was another favorite of mine, beginning with "short-vowel sounds, slowly progressing to whole words, phrases, and sentences of gradually increasing complexity." These two guidebooks and just reading simple books of the student's choosing help propel them into the world of reading.
Reading,

Reading

To teach reading, I like to use a combination of the phonetic approach, using Phonics Pathways, by Dolores Hiskes; the Bob Books, and other age-appropriate beginning readers appropriate to the child's interests. I also encourage adults reading aloud to the child, whether it is parents or teachers. This instills in children a love for reading and helps them to be motivated to learn to read.

ACT English

I guide students through the basic principles of the test and use actual ACT tests to help students practice, giving them familiarity with the types of test questions that often appear on the ACT. ACT Reading,

I guide students using actual ACT tests to give them practice understanding the types of questions that will be asked. Over time, we will work to increase a student's speed by using a timer for sections. We track scores and students' progress as we move through our tutoring sessions.

I have taught English to my own homeschooled children, using the Classical Writing curriculum written by Rene Jaqua and Kathy Weitz through the Diogenes: Maxim and Chreia levels along with Intermediate Poetry. I have also coached writing and grammar, using Harvey's Elementary Grammar, which uses diagramming and parsing as tools. The Classical Writing curriculum also focuses on writing through imitation techniques; rewriting passages in multiple ways (copia); focusing on expanding passages by adding modifiers, phrases and clauses; and reducing passages all the way down to one summary sentence (precis). I have also tutored students preparing for the ACT English, Reading, and Writing tests and the other ACT subjects.

I tutored the entire ACT test for several students during the school year 2013 to 2014 and the English section of the ACT for international students taking the ACT test for in Montgomery, AL for the full school year of 2014 to 2015. My primary method for tutoring is using the ACT official practice tests available online and using The Real ACT Prep Guide available through Amazon or other vendors. We will work together on understanding the questions and how to arrive at the correct answers by reviewing skills in each subject area and also by learning strategies for developing speed at completing the sections in the time allotted. We will spend our time together primarily reviewing these general topics in addition to covering specific questions on the practice tests that are giving the student trouble.

I give ADD/ADHD children the special attention they need to stay focused on their work. This includes giving them clear expectations, the freedom to be able to move around while learning, and figuring out ways to capture their interest so that learning becomes more fun than a chore. I will also help them to organize their school work in a notebook with checklists or find some other way of giving them a clear reminder of what the expectations are. I will also devise a reward system for completing work accurately or even just for staying focused for a designated period of time. Every child is unique, and I will work with parents to figure out what works best for their child.

Magnificent tutor

Nancy prepared my daughter extremely well for the ACT. She was able to obtain the higher score she needed on her ACT to qualify for a great scholarship. I had an extremely busy schedule and Nancy was accommodating. When I had questions or concerns, Nancy replied to emails immediately. Thank you, Nancy, for being so understanding and an effective tutor.

Taylor, 6 lessons with Nancy

If you're looking for a caring and qualified tutor, Nancy is the one

Nancy tutored two of my adopted children from April to August in math, reading, and ESL. My children went alternately every weekday for one hour during this period. My kids arrived with us in the US after being adopted in Ukraine, and, honestly, I didn't know where to turn to help them prepare for school in the fall. We adopted four children with varying degrees of education. I tried tutoring myself, and found the task overwhelming and very time-consuming. My wife and I decided to seek the help of someone more qualified to help our two children who needed it the most, our 12-year-old and our 16-year-old. The 16-year-old could speak only a few words of English and lacked simple math skills like adding and subtracting. We searched WyzAnt and other sites and decided to contact Nancy based on her qualifications and experience. We met her and, right away, we knew we had found not just a good person for the job but, perhaps, the best person we could have dreamt of to tutor our kids. Nancy immediately put the kids at ease about learning in their new world. Despite their lack of education and sometimes lack of interest, Nancy was never frustrated or demeaning with them. She approached the subjects in a variety of ways to keep the kids engaged and constantly moving forward. She also was very good at not moving too fast if more time was needed on a certain area. Using workbooks, games, and reading, Nancy was able to skillfully target our kids' needs. After each session, Nancy provided a thorough written analysis of what was covered, how the kids responded, and what their homework should include. On a few occasions, when we were not able to personally meet with Nancy, she even held lessons via Skype. She was always prepared and acted as if our kids' education was the most important thing she had to do all day, even though she also tutored other kids. Our children improved greatly in their English and math skills during this time. Our 16-year-old can now understand most of what is said to her and hold conversations in English. She can express her needs and feelings to us and she has a pretty good understanding of how English is structured. The 12-year-old loved his lessons and his homework! He moved from feeling inferior in his skills to openly displaying what he could do, especially in reading. While only a few months of tutoring cannot fully bring the kids up to an education-level equivalent to their ages, I do think the time spent with Nancy laid the foundation needed for their school teachers to build upon. They have confidence that they can learn in a new environment with a new language and that was our goal for this summer. One of the first sentences our-16-year old spoke after beginning work with Nancy was, "My teacher is very good. I like."
