Western Washington University (Physics, BS)
I'm a 20 year old undergraduate from Fairbanks, AK. I am currently enrolled at Western Washington University and plan to graduate with a BS in Physics in June 2017. I just finished my second year in the Physics and Astronomy Department and I've nearly completed my Astronomy minor. I had to opportunity to work as a TA for the Physics and Astronomy Dept. and really enjoyed helping students work through concepts and come to an understanding of the material. Being a TA also helped to reinforce my own learning and improve my own understanding of fundamental concepts. The best part about being a TA or tutor is getting your students to share your enthusiasm for a subject and showing that learning can be exciting.
I had two years of college math classes, including Calculus I & II, Multivariable Calculus I, Ordinary Differential Equations I, and Linear Algebra I & II. I have independent research experience.
I had two years of college physics classes, including Physics w/ Calculus I-IV, Modern Physics I & II, Tools and Data Analysis in Physics, Fundamentals of Electronics, Stars & Galaxies, Cosmology. I have experience as a TA for introductory Physics labs.
I believe in a guided approach, pointing students in the right direction and letting them discover the answers themselves. Getting students to think critically and ask key questions benefits the learning experience far better than simply explaining the answer. I also think learning should be a fun and interesting experience, and physics & astronomy offer plenty of opportunities for exciting and thought-provoking activities. I work well with students of any age and have a great deal of patience and understanding for students who struggle with certain concepts. I can be reached via email. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
