I would like to introduce myself. My name is Debbie and I am an endurance athlete with many interests, talents, and accomplishments. I have overcome many fears to receive numerous academic and marathon awards over the years. I have over 15 years teaching experience from Special Education needs to Gifted. I am ESL certified and spent 9 months in North Vietnam teaching English. I love to travel and why I became a teacher leader with People to People Leadership program. These trips included a medical summit excursion to Johns Hopkins University, the Presidential Inauguration 4 years ago, a trip to Washington DC, and community service project to New Orleans. I am involved in numerous youth groups and through the years was involved in the 4H Youth program in Southern California.
Besides teaching, I am a life long learner myself. I have competed in a marathon in all 50 states placing in 41 states. I am one of only 16 women who have raced these marathons under 4 hours in each state. I collected teaching material to teach students in Anchorage in the gifted IGNITE program in ASD. I found it exciting and had to learn to teach these hands on thematic units tying in all subject areas. I am an outdoor environmental person and garden, hunt, fish, ski, hike, bike and collect berries. I love traveling and culture and find every opportunity I can to meet others and interact with them and share ideas. I have a lot of energy. Last but not least, I love to cook and eat. I believe tutoring gives students that extra boost and attention that does not come from large classroom settings. I am very quick to recognize an individuals strengths and weaknesses to make the most of your time.
I always loved math as a young student as excelled throughout my own education. I am good with numbers and believe in the multiple intelligences. Math and logistics is my strength. I love problem solving and equations and believe math is the base of all we do in life. Becoming fluent in math will help enhance success in all other subject areas. It does not come as easy for all, so this is why I build confidence for those students who do not like or find math as easy to grasp. Math is fun and I help make it that way.
I have studied ESL and been to Vietnam. I love culture and language and find the way I was taught is not today and there is so much missing to make it easier to read, write, and speak. I had my own children in 4H programs and they showed their animals at the fair. They had to speak in front of judges and to this day, as adults in late 20's and early 30's, they remain success and communicate professionally. My goal is to become a motivational speaker one day.
As far as grammar, I feel too much is missing in the classroom and there are some basic rules not taught. Students often lack confidence in their writing and speaking skills; perhaps being overcorrected. I can help change this. All throughout school, I was an honor and high honor student. I graduated from college with a 4.0 Phi Kappa Phi Honor and won many scholarships for my college education. I had to write to receive these.
I am very flexible and open to your needs. I am friendly, fun, and care very much. You will know this and feel it in my lessons with you. I like to get to your interests as well and for you to know mine. I believe this helps trust and you will learn naturally. Give me a try and see what I can do for you! With all my travel stories, I am very interesting. I have many pictures and I can help you set goals, THINK BIG, and believe to achieve. I would like to introduce myself. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
