About Cortney

Hello!

My name is Cortney and I am a K-Adult tutor. I'm originally from Anchorage, Alaska and recently returned after spending 5 years in Claremont, California. There, I attended Pomona college and received my bachelor's in Sociology. During my time at Pomona, I developed a passion for working with people; I sought classes, community engagement experiences, and work opportunities which focused heavily on providing access to resources, particularly in the realm of education. My passion is helping individuals of all ages achieve their educational goals through proper planning, preparation, organization, and supplementary learning resources.

My first experience with teaching came after my Sophomore year of college. In 2012, I worked for a Southern California summer enrichment program where I developed and taught lesson plans for 7th-9th grade students in the areas of biology and college skills. There, I began to see the importance of small-group engagement, advising and culturally sensitive teaching methods.

For the following two years at Pomona College, I volunteered in a nonprofit partnership between students at Pomona and a local organization who connects low-income students in primarily Spanish speaking households to engaging programs on campus. As a mentor, I guided 3-4 students, grades 7-9, giving feedback and small lessons on many aspects of writing. Later, as a Coordinator, I worked with my peers to develop and implement creative writing lesson plans which focused on grammar and technical skills within story writing, poetry, spoken word and more!

I have been a private tutor since Fall 2015 and have since then worked with 30+ individuals on subjects ranging from Pre-K phonics, to middle school level math, to high school level chemistry and more. What grounds my practice is a belief that every individual is an intellectual. I lead with the growth mindset which means progress and improvement is always achievable with dedicated practice. Above all, I believe that education and educational support should be accessible to all because knowledge is power.

Session prices are dependent upon level of study, level of commitment, number of hours, and travel considerations. Monthly rates are available. Meetings will take place in a public space in Anchorage such as campuses, libraries or coffee shops.

If you would like to speak with me about you or your child's tutoring needs, please feel free to contact me.

Warmly,
Cortney

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

In college, I produced several big projects using InDesign. In a program called the Weekly Writing Workshop, which I coordinated and mentored, I produced a 100+ page literary magazine using InDesign and also taught my other coordinators how to use the program. Additionally, I took an art class in which I produced two artistic magazines using the program. These projects required collaborative efforts in which students taught each other how to use the program. Finally, in my last year in college, I created a short story which I self published, as well as a leader handbook for an orientation committee at Pomona College. My background in InDesign is immense and I am excited to help others learn what creative things they can do with this program.

College Counseling

I am very familiar with the public and private domains of higher education. During high school, I spent much of my time at the College and Career center where I learned much of what I know now about how to decipher characteristics of colleges and the admissions processes for each. After my sophomore year of college, I taught 9th grade college skills to a group of 15 students in a summer program. There, I learned about how to connect underrepresented students to the skills and resources they need for a successful transition into college, wherever that may be.

Elementary Math

For the past year I have worked as a tutor with a large focus on elementary math grades 3 and up. I am familiar with common core and I always strive to find creative ways to make math fun!

English

For two years, I coordinated and taught in a program called the Weekly Writing Workshop. This program works with underrepresented students grades 4-9. In 3W, I worked closely with students to develop creative writing and technical skills, to include grammar, spelling and parts of speech.

Grammar

For two years, I worked with a program called the Weekly Writing Workshop, a program which works with underrepresented students. There, I worked closely with students to develop creative writing and technical skills, to include grammar, spelling and parts of speech.

Handwriting

Handwriting, even in the age of advanced technology, is still an important skill. Thus, it is a skill I practice everyday. Part of my work as coordinator and mentor in the Weekly Writing Workshop was to help students develop their handwriting, their technical and grammar skills and their literary voices.

Reading

For several months, I have worked with 3rd graders on reading. My understanding of phonics, pronunciation, word structure and the nature of the English language make me a qualified instructor of the subject.
