I have lived in Anchorage for more than 25 years. I have worked in the field of education for all 25 years with the Anchorage School District. I was an Interpreter for the Deaf for ten years. In that role, I work in all three school levels, elementary, middle and high school. Working as an interpreter gave me much exposure in the classroom setting. As an interpreter I also tutored my deaf students in core subjects. I am well acquainted with all math and reading strategies. As an interpreter for the deaf, I was able to simplify math concepts to my students. After 10 years working as an interpreter I took a sabbatical to work as a missionary in Haiti. I worked at an orphanage with 50 students under my supervision. Part of that role was tutoring in a second language. I have a strong grasp in helping students understand concepts.
I absolutely love tutoring. I enjoy getting to know my students and their particular learning style. I particular love working with students that struggle in a core subject. It delights me to see the connection when they grasp a concept. I like to think outside the box in working with my students. I enjoy traditional tutoring environments working at their home with a structured workplace. But I also enjoy taking field trips to the library and other learning places. If I think a student will be more successful taking a break at the park and working their, I'll try it. I don't have to stick to anything that is not working.
Since 2002, I have worked in the school district as a bilingual tutor. As a bilingual tutor I support students in reading and math. As a reading tutor, I work with grades kindergarden to 6th grade. I am able to help kindergardeners blend CVC words, letter and sound recognition. I have used a sound curriculum in both of these areas. It has proven successful and I am very confident in using it. I am confident in working with blending with 1st graders as well. And work on their fluency which is highly needed in elementary school. I mostly work on fluency and visualization with 2nd graders. Visualization is the corner stone of reading comprehension. Visualization is also what I work mostly with 3rd graders. I am able to support math skills from kindergarten to 6th grade. Some in middle school but not as strongly.
My reading strategies are my strongest skill. Whether it is getting a young reader to begin to blend or getting a high schooler to develop independent and higher thinking skills. I love reading with students. I have several resources to help with grammar and reading. Because I work at an elementary school most of my resources are geared for that age. I am able to develop any grade level
Since I work at an elementary school, this is my comfort zone. As a bilingual tutor at my particular school, I have my own classroom. I work directly with students. I develop my own curriculum to meet the needs of each student or each small group. With kinders and 1st graders I help with blending CVC words, letter and sound recognition. I also help with basic math skills; counting and one digit adding and subtraction.
Second and 3rd graders are usually working on fluency and comprehension. I have resources to address both. I am very familiar with grade expectations in Math. I am able to help students meet the individual expectations. I mostly help 4th-6th graders with reading comprehension by retelling, predicting and connecting the story line with personal experiences that will foster critical thinking skills.
Phonics is my strongest success. I am able to help students with simple CVC phonics. I also can assist them throughout all phonics that include diphthongs and other phonograms that are more than one letter. Most of my educator experience is working with elementary students where phonics takes place more than other grade levels. This is an area that I am most comfortable and confident in.
Once the students is confident in phonics and begin to blend successfully, we will start to work on fluency in reading the phonics that he or she is learning. Fluency will help the student to begin to comprehend what she is reading much better because he is able to hear what is being read. I will ask the student to begin to retell short portion of the text and as the reader become confident the retelling with gradually increase.
I love working with students. I am a student so I appreciate the hard work it takes to be successful in learning. I am now enrolled at Grand Canyon University in an online program in Elementary Education. I do not have a teacher's certificate but my years of experience far exceeds my not having a certificate.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked as a bilingual tutor in the elementary setting in the Anchorage School District for 10 years. During the ten years, I have been trained in phonics and reading strategies. The strategies that I have found very successful is called Ashlock. I am very confident and comfortable with this resource. I also have access to a website that offers a wide range of phonics and reading strategies.
