Hi everyone! My name is Jackie. Below you can read about my academic background and my tutoring experience. I have received many positive reviews from people whom I have tutored and I hope to be able to help more students achieve their scholastic goals.

I feel comfortable tutoring in many subjects, from math to music, and so the biography is broad. Hopefully it covers all of my relevant qualifications for the subject with which you need more help.

My university academic background: I am a graduate student in physics at the University of Washington. I majored in physics at Brigham Young University-Provo with minors in math, chemistry, and music. Additionally, I completed eight undergraduate and one graduate level biology course, and I completed the Honors program at BYU which emphasized standard works, including reading many classic books and analyzing different types of music, visual arts, movies, and dance. Although I am now a Ph.D. candidate in physics at UW, for a time I considered going to medical school and received a MCAT score in the 95th percentile. My GRE and physics GRE scores were also high. I am a National Merit Scholar, I received an ARCS fellowship at UW, and recently I was awarded an NSF Graduate Fellowship.

My high school academic background: I took eight AP tests while in high school: European Studies, Calculus BC, Statistics, English Language, U.S. History, Spanish Language, Computer Science AB, and Physics C. I received 4s (on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the best) on European Studies, Spanish, and Computer Science AB, and 5s on the rest of my tests. I auditioned into advanced orchestra for the last two years of high school. I was mentioned at my high school graduation as being reputed to help anyone with their questions about any subject.

Tutoring experience: I tutored as a volunteer for high school and university students throughout all four years at BYU and loved it. I was able to help university students prep for the MCAT, GRE, and subject GRE (in physics). I currently work as a physics TA at UW. I also taught piano, violin, and basic music skills (rhythm, notes, etc) to beginning students while I was in middle school and high school.

Areas of expertise: I feel confident tutoring at least all basic science subjects (physics, math, chemistry, biology) from elementary school through the first year of undergraduate. I feel comfortable teaching beginning piano and music theory to students of all ages. Although I have no official tutor experience in history or English, I was frequently asked by friends in high school to read their essays and check their facts, and I did well on AP tests and in undergraduate classes.

Currently I am taking students who either can meet Wednesday or Thursday evenings or are looking for a few hours of tutoring occasionally (i.e. prepping for a final project or exam). This is to help me balance tutoring with my graduate school schedule. I look forward to meeting with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have been an active member of my church for my entire life and have studied the Bible since I was very young. I use other resources (including reputable websites, books, and other people) when I have questions about interpretation of scripture in order to best understand what was intended in the scripture and how it is meant to be applied today. I enjoy discussion and comparing different viewpoints on the Bible in order to better understand what the authors meant and differences between religions who have different interpretations for the same scripture.

Differential Equations

I have earned a math minor which required a class in differential equations and also took partial differential equations through the physics department. I feel comfortable with differential equations and received good grades in these classes.

Fitness

I have taken several college-level fitness courses and stay up-to-date on recent fitness and nutrition developments. I work out regularly and have coached several of my friends (none with severe physical problems) in general fitness and health.

General Music

I have taught beginning piano for six years and beginning violin for two years. I was in an audition orchestra in high school and earned a music minor in college. Most of my experience has been with children in elementary school, and I also taught basic music skills to a women in her 50s for six months.

Genetics

Undergraduate genetics courses were easy to understand for me. I received an A or A- on every genetics class or test about genetics I took. I both understand the genetic concepts and the equations, and feel comfortable helping other students bridge the gap.

Linear Algebra

I received an A in my undergraduate Linear Algebra class with a reputedly difficult teacher. Since then, I've applied my linear algebra skills in physics and math classes with great results. I am able to demonstrate the importance and application of linear algebra to students and am ready to help more students understand these concepts.

MATLAB

I took two scientific computing classes at the undergraduate level in Matlab as part of my physics degree, and use Matlab for my research as a graduate student.

MCAT

I took the MCAT myself in 2009 and received a score in the 95th percentile. While I did well in every subject, my particular strengths lie in subjects with which premed students usually struggle the most, including the physical sciences and the writing portion. I know what it takes to earn a good score on this test and I can help other students do the same.

Music History

As part of my music minor in undergraduate years, I was required to take several rigorous music history courses in order to better understand music theory. I feel confident in helping other students learn the historical progression of music and how it has influenced the music of today.

Piano

I have taught piano to beginning students since I was thirteen. From then until now, I have helped approximately twenty students master necessary piano fundamentals. I have the patience and the knowledge to help students of all ages learn how to play this entertaining and fundamental instrument.

Religion

I have actively studied many religions since I was young. I took religion courses, including World Religions, in my undergraduate years to gain perspective, and I have read the entirety of the Koran, the Bible, and the Book of Mormon in an effort to find truth and to better understand people from different cultures. I appreciate open-minded discussion about different beliefs and learning more about people and how their belief in God affects the way they live their lives. Tutoring religion is difficult, since it seems that each person views religion a little differently, but I am open to discussion about what religion means to each individual and how this understanding can lead us both to truth and to better relations with those around us.
