I have abundant energy, enthusiasm, and empathy, and have amassed a great deal of diverse teaching experience.
My M.Ed. is from the University of Washington s is my B.S. from The University of Washington. My B.S. is in speech and hearing sciences.
A great deal of my training is in special education, and I am endorsed for ages birth-21. Other strengths include teaching all aspects of English and test preparation. While earning my BS in speech and hearing sciences, I also gained experience in ESL, TOEFL preparation and accent reduction which I enjoyed very much.
Subjects I have taught include:
K-6 -- English (primarily grammar, spelling, vocabulary and composition), elementary math (up to algebra 1), elementary science, health, and social/communication skills.
8th grade + -- English (composition, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling), careers, SAT/ACT prep (English portion), Pacific Northwest History, world religions, cultural anthropology, psychology, sociology, interpersonal communications, and health. I also have experience helping students complete college applications (with a high success rate of acceptance).
My career experiences have given me the opportunity to work with a diverse student population including individuals who have ADD/HD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Tourette's, OCD, anxiety disorders or mood disorders such as depression or bipolar disorder, eating disorders and more. My passion in working with these particular students has been in not only helping students to strengthen academic skills, but also to develop and implement communications and other self-help strategies to foster independence and improve overall functioning. I also have experience coaching students, teachers, families, and employers to understand disabilities and accommodations that may help improve skills across settings.
Currently I am working part-time as a consultant to do curriculum development and teacher presentations for a local non-profit organization. This position allows me to have a very flexible schedule.
