I am a National Merit Scholar with a BA in Economics and an MA in International Development, currently working on ESL certification. I am a long-time freelance writer, with experience working for the U.S. Agency for International Development in Russia and Eastern Europe. My focus is on integrating the subject matter with the current interests of the student, making the learning process interesting so that the material will be easy to remember. I also help students with effective time management and study planning.
I am currently working toward a Virginia Teaching license, and as a result have taken one Praxis II test, and am preparing to take others. I scored a 183 on the Social Studies: Content Knowledge exam in July 2013 (out of a possible range of 100-200). Average scores are in the 158-177 range. I can work with other aspiring teachers to improve test preparations skills and do their very best on these challenging exams.
As a high school student, I participated in Debate Club and Model United Nations. After completing my Masters degree, I joined the Toastmasters International Club to improve my public speaking skills. I was a member of the U.S. Delegation to Habitat II, the Second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements, held in Istanbul in 1996. Not only can I help students to prepare and be comfortable when preparing for a public speaking engagement, I can help coach them on connecting with the audience, maintaining a good cadence and eye contact, and employing humor, if needed, to regain composure.
I studied Russian language and culture as an undergraduate student at American University in Washington, DC. I experienced life in the then Soviet Union through an immersion program traveling to Moscow and St. Petersburg during my semester abroad. After earning my M.A. in International Development, I had an opportunity to return to Russia as a contractor for the U.S. Agency for International Development.
I am currently working toward a Virginia Teaching license. I tutor students from grade school to graduate school, and I have found that each and every person benefits from coaching on planning and time management. Although each individual learns differently and faces a wide variety of challenges when tackling a new subject, basic time management and study skills help the student to overcome those challenges one step at a time. Many students are struggling because they are overwhelmed by increasing amounts of homework as they grow older. While some teachers DO assign too much homework, each student can learn to approach every task more efficiently and productively. I help students to look ahead in their schedules and strategically organize their time, so that they can complete their homework assignments, and approach each test feeling fully prepared, well-rested and confident.
