For adults, we may be unaware of the presence of algebra because we have internalized the processes and forgotten the names of the steps. But for younger students, algebra seems to be an abstract foreign language. The key to success is illustrating the concepts in a way that links the processes to meaningful situations. I work with my students to find real-life examples of algebra concepts to help the true application and meaning of algebra come to life.
Math can be a challenging subject for students of any age. A strong foundation in elementary math sets the stage for student success in higher-level math courses. Elementary math includes performing the basic mathematic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), as well as the ability to manipulate fractions, find an unknown quantity, and compare different units. For many, successful grasping of these concepts come through the use of manipulatives, visual graphics, and graphic organizers.
Geometry is a complex branch of mathematics dealing with shapes, their properties, and their movements in space. For many students, the introduction of geometry is challenging and abstract. I work with geometry students to model shapes, their properties, and their changes in location throughout space. I believe being able to bridge the informational gap between concrete, representational, and abstract concepts is the way to helping students understand and internalize the meaning of geometric concepts.
Prealgebra bridges the gap between elementary math and algebra. During prealgebra, students begin looking past the rules of math and begin acquiring an understand of the underlying mechanisms of math. Some think of this as a concentration on the "why" of math. Such thinking helps students prepare for the more abstract processes of algebra.
Psychology is the study of human behavior. Though we may take it for granted, psychology is all around us. Psychology explains how we learn behaviors--both good behaviors and bad behaviors--and how we interact with others. Psychology is the basis of influence and has incredible impacts on health.
My passion for psychology led me to earn a Bachelor's degree in psychology and a Master's degree in biological and health psychology. I have nearly ten years of psychology research experience with a focus on addiction and behavioral learning. My academic and experiential learning in psychology supplements my training in special education and allows me to tailor my teaching to meed the needs of my students. I do this all while making the underlying mechanisms of psychology as relevant as possible.
