I have been a respected teacher in South Kingstown for 26 years. For the last 3 years I have been the reading specialist at my elementary school building and have had great success with my students. In my daily work I teach a wide variety of struggling readers, both regular and special ed.
The picture I have uploaded is one from by website and while it may be a few years old - wow, what a split! I have my black belt from Ichiban Karate and also coach a local girls 9 - 12 slow pitch softball team.
In tutoring children I try to use a multi-sensory approach whenever possible. I often have the child use a dry-erase board, magnetic letters, letter tiles, or chalkboard. Sometimes we stand and form letters in the air. I also try to work within the child's interests or learning style. I do what works for each child in each situation - I never use a one-shot-fits all approach.
I am, however, trained in Reading Recovery, an intensive 1 on 1 program for struggling first graders. While not all children need this approach, I often use pieces of it in my work.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I have a degree as a reading specialist and have worked for 3 years as a reading specialist in a public elementary school working with children at risk of failing, both regular and special ed. I am trained in Reading Recovery which targets the lowest first graders in the school.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified 1 - 6 as a regular classroom teacher and Pre K - 12 as a reading specialist. I have taught for 23 years in public school in grades 1, 2 and 4. I have worked for 3 years as a reading specialist.

Handwriting

I have taught first grade for 23 years. I taught handwriting every day. We have used Handwriting Without Tears, along with several other programs in that time.

Phonics

In my role as a reading specialist I have a great deal of experience with the Fundations program that we use at our school. This is a multi-sensory phonics program.

Reading

I have an undergraduate degree in elementary education and psychology. My master's degree is in reading. I have worked as a reading specialist for 3 years in the town of South Kingstown. I am also trained in Reading Recovery and have used it for 3 years.

Special Needs

In my role as the reading specialist I have services many children in reading who have diagnosed special needs. Many of the children have been learning disabled, but many have speech/language difficulties, and several children have had behavioral difficulties as well.

Spelling

I taught mostly 1st and 2nd grade for 23 years. Spelling is a daily subject in 1st and 2nd grade. I have recently been trained in Fundations, a spelling/phonics program used in South Kingstown.

Vocabulary

I have taught mostly 1st and 2nd grade for 23 years and 3 years as a reading specialist. I have regularly worked with vocabulary during that time. Right now I am tutoring a 39 year old disabled adult in reading and much of the work centers around increasing her vocabulary.
