Sometimes classrooms just can't provide the one-on-one attention you need to excel. Learning doesn't have to be dull or life-sucking like it is in many schools. Perhaps you're ready to make a change in your own life and need a little help to get started. Tutoring can help you hone your skills or to catch up in areas of weakness, and I'm eager to help!
While I have successfully tutored students in many subjects, I consider myself first and foremost a teacher of writing. I obsess over grammar - when I take a beach vacation, I always treat myself to a grammar book to read in the sun. I'm kind of nerdy like that. I don't just teach my students what's "right" and "wrong" in regard to grammar. Instead, we study how the language works. My goal is to help my students become lifelong writers (and readers), not only to master a test.
Areas of instruction include:
SAT Critical Reading
GRE Quantitative Reasoning
GRE Analytical Writing
Praxis English Subject Area
Reading and writing skills
College application essays
Algebra I and II
I am uniquely qualified as a tutor. I've earned a Ph.D. in Reading, Writing and Literacy from the University of Pennsylvania. Not only do I have hundreds of hours of tutoring experience, but I am also certified in both English AND Math (a very rare qualification). I hold Pennsylvania Level II teaching certifications in English 7-12, Math 7-12, and Health K-12. Additionally, I was two classes away from getting a B.S. in general science.
Standardized test prep is a huge industry. Many of my students have tried several centers and packaged systems before beginning with me, and I often hear them say that they've never learned like this before and that my advice is perfect for their unique needs. When I work with you, I'm not following a scripted curriculum. Instead, I'm evaluating your particular strengths and weaknesses and developing *your* strategy to get you the highest score possible.
I have spent years working with high school students on their plans for the future, including preparing for college admissions interviews and drafting short answers and essays for application. My students often hear that their application essays stand out from the pack. I deeply enjoy helping students pick the best university for their learning and career goals. I have Pennsylvania Level II teaching certifications in English 7-12, Math 7-12, and Health K-12.
I am fascinated by English grammar and invest time each year in learning more about it. I teach master's level grammar courses but am able to break concepts down so that even young students grasp them. I help students understand the fluidity of English grammar and guide them to understand grammar beyond worksheets. I use grammar to help my students read complex texts more effectively and efficiently, as well as to construct sentences that are clearer and more sophisticated.
For several years, I have been working with students on the verbal section of the MCAT. In lessons, we talk about how to approach the most challenging passages, how to better understand what the questions are asking, how to feel confident about answer choices and eliminate any that are meant to distract, and how to effectively skim and manage time. As with my other lessons, MCAT Verbal lessons are modified to best attend to my student's individual needs. My master's and doctoral work has been in reading and literacy, so I am uniquely equipped and qualified to help students in the verbal section.
I have been an avid fiber artist since I was a young teenager. I do needlepoint and cross-stitch and have dozens of completed projects. I also am an advanced crocheter and have even developed my own patterns. I love helping others get started with these relaxing, creative arts.
I am a PhD student in education who has finished all of her coursework and preliminary exams. I have taken and have passed the Praxis I with very high scores; in fact, I even received an award for being in the 99th percentile of Praxis I test-takers. I am very familiar with the format of the Praxis and am equipped to tutor in all three sections of the test: reading, writing, and math. I have helped other education students pass the Praxis. I have also passed the Praxis II in English, mathematics, and health for grades 7-12 in Pennsylvania.
We'll cover tricks and tips that will save you time, and we'll only use methods that will work for you. I'll help you master vocabulary and learn how to get through those tricky author's tone and comparing two passages questions.
We'll break down grammar concepts, delineate popular types of questions so you're familiar with the patterns of grammar questions, and write practice essays. You'll get extensive feedback on your writing that will help you identify key areas for improvement, instead of just getting a score or some ambiguous feedback that teachers are known for like "vague" or "wordy."
Throughout my years of experience as a high school teacher and as a tutor, I have worked with innumerable students on their study skills. We talk about organization, note-taking, personal responsibility, self-advocacy, and test-taking strategies. These study skills are invaluable in a student's success in K-12 classes and beyond.
I have been working with several students on the TEAS test, particularly on the verbal skills, reading comprehension, and mathematics sections of the test. However, I am also prepared to help students with the biology and chemistry questions that appear on the science test.
After years as a high school teacher and tutor of standardized tests like the SAT and the GRE, I am truly prepared to help students master vocabulary. I'm armed with an arsenal of flashcards, lists, and unique vocabulary study strategies. I'm also skilled at helping students use grammar and context to glean enough meaning to answer questions successfully. Additionally, I help students learn how to use new vocabulary words correctly so their spoken and written vocabulary becomes more sophisticated.
I consider myself first and foremost a teacher of writing. I help students recognize their own strengths as a writer, as well as any patterns of weakness. I help students develop writing that is sophisticated but readable and interesting. One of my goals is to help students better know how to edit and revise their own work. I have spent years helping students write to prompts and to develop their own ideas for prompt-less writing. As a college professor, I help my graduate students write thesis proposals and dissertations, so I am well versed in sophisticated research. I am especially skilled in MLA and APA format. I also help dozens of students write their college and graduate school application essays each fall.
